Crumbling Foundations?

PDF version: Anderson WEEKLY 150627

“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3)

As this week’s decision by the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) again showed, the moral foundation of U.S. culture continues to shift. We do what Christians of every century have done when their government usurps authority and attempts to defy God’s Word. We . . .
  • Courageously continue to share and live the Good News with family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers, knowing that individual lives transformed by Christ will transform our culture, and that of Cote d’Ivoire where we are called to plant churches that do ministry and plant others (Ps. 11:1).
  • Prayerfully prepare for persecutions that will come as we obey God rather than man (v.2).
  • Radically repent for all our failings to worship in family as the Lord defines and so model the family’s strength and beauty (v.4b; De.6:1-19, Ep.5).
  • Compassionately care for the sinner while clearly confronting sin, home to home, in loving community (v.5; Jo.7:19, Ga.6:1).
  • Boldly broadcast citizens’ God-given rights and so bravely battle to protect the religious liberty of coming generations (v.7; example of prophets).
  • Resolutely refuse to wring our hands in despair because we know the Sovereign Word of our Lord reigns and we rest in His care! (v.7)
Thank you for praying for our family this week:
  • Our children: Cason and Suzanne serve as foster parents through September before beginning the adoption process; Cara has changed nursing jobs and trains to float between locations; Corbin faces spiritual challenges at his fast food summer job, and even some 13-hour work days, as around half the staff was fired when he hired on. Pray that their Godly influence of others grows.
  • Our mobile home residence is almost set up, but our fifty year old bodies are feeling it! Pray for physical strength, and good meetings in Tennessee for the next few weeks.
  • Positive developments of Community Health Evangelism in Cote d’Ivoire may affect where we decide to live when we return to the field. Ask the Lord for guiding wisdom.
We are blessed, indeed, to call you partners and friends!

Fathers Who Act

PDF version: Anderson WEEKLY 150620

Click image for 3 min CHE video
This Father’s Day video shares how fathers who lead their wives and children change families and communities in response to God. This 3 minute cut of the Christian World News network video is that which Verlin uses most during travels to briefly illustrate how the prototypical Community Health Evangelism program unfolds. It shares what God did amidst the Medical Ambassadors International Community Health Evangelism effort in the Congo by the early 2000’s. The stats are a little old . . . today there are over 330 Congolese led programs. Don't forget, this strategy unfolds to be used by many U.S. churches in U.S.locations known as Neighborhood Transformation.

In follow-up of other news,
  1. The visit to the Bondoukou circle of a short-term medical team ministry of Heartbeat for Africa and new Christian Health Service Corps medical missionaries appears to have encouraged the continuing revitalization of an existing FWB CHE program.
  2. Per Facebook reports, an attempt to make a city wide CHE effort has also been stimulated. Other info received in the week showed God’s favor and we hope to share it after verification in weeks to come.
  3. Also, Verlin has been invited to share / expand CHE amidst churches in the center and north of Cote d’Ivoire.
  4. Last but not least in importance to ongoing ministry, this past week and the coming have been dedicated to our setup of a permanent U.S. residential interest in the U.S. to maintain affordable health insurance. Special thanks to ‘Mom’ Elsie Anderson for having stocked our ‘household memories’ from Africa for the last 19 months. They are now in Cookeville with us after a 30 hour total trip to rent, load, and unload a 26’ U-Haul truck.

Dependency Breaker

PDF version: Anderson WEEKLY 150613

Today we share the story of a person whose life has been greatly impacted by Community Health Evangelism (CHE). M. came to one of our CHE trainings in the spring of 2007. At that time, he was working full-time for a missionary in a successful outreach. The CHE principles touched him deeply. He felt led to further his education with the goal of developing venues for Ivorians to overcome dependence on exterior aid, while learning to be agents of change in their own culture.
Family MG
Completing his masters in sociology and a doctorate over several years came at a high cost to his family. During his training in Egypt, civil conflict broke out back home in Cote d’Ivoire, and his wife lost their first baby. He wondered if the price was too high, but prayerfully persevered.

Today he is employed full-time by the Ivorian National Agency of Development, in addition to spear-heading CHE work in his sphere of influence. One remarkable CHE project he developed teaches micro-enterprise to over 200 women. Small groups (usually 3 or 4 Christian ladies paired with 1 or 2 unbelievers) meet weekly to learn how to run their own businesses and to set up revolving loan funds, while always addressing spiritual topics, too. Women are saved in the process, and M.’s denomination hopes to use this strategy nationwide in churches to assist women and to witness. Seeing the progress of the women has made men want to start groups, as well! Another separate effort he crafted reaches out to Muslim leaders in their communities. We were thrilled this week when M. confirmed that he can serve as one of the CHE trainer at the university this fall! Continue to pray for remaining university details to fall in place.

The short-term CHE medical team has completed their work in Cote d’Ivoire. Pray that their efforts will serve as a spark for a church to be planted in a new village, as planned by one group of Ivorians who received them.

Verlin and Debbie

A Reason to Suffer

PDF of 2015 1Q report: Anderson Report 15_06_06
The missionary path is always full of twists and turns, replete with unexpected blessings as well as constant obstacles. As Evan Burns said in an article to missionaries about there being not shortcuts in ministry, “God loves his servants so much that He allows them to suffer, so that His grace will sustain them in order to make His glory known.”  (http://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/the-missionary-life-no-shortcuts)
See the attached PDF for our quarterly report, highlighting some of the blessings and obstacles of our last three months, along with the January-March 2015 financial report.
Thank you for being our cloud of witnesses on this journey! Your prayers, participation, and encouragement mean so much.
So that His glory may be known in West Africa,
Verlin and Debbie
