Flowering Life

PDF Version : Anderson_WEEKLY_160130

Community Health Evangelism (CHE) has not been in French speaking West Africa, where we live, for as long as it has flowered in other parts of Africa. This month’s video lets you hear the 5 minute testimony of Ethiopian believers in East Africa. The Lord has amazingly transformed their worldview and communities through CHE ministries which they lead. Perhaps you will get teary-eyed along with us to see women asking God, “Are we worthy?” Or maybe you will be challenged by the spiritual maturity of the CHE leaders who have learned that money from outside the community can sometimes destroy people instead of helping them.

What you observe in this video is what you are helping to be seen in Cote d’Ivoire as you pray and give. Thank you for touching lives now and for eternity!

Prayer and Praise:
  • Items are getting checked off our long “to-do” list, despite interrupting challenges along the way. Our vehicle has been in the shop for 5 days getting some major repairs done before leaving it for Corbin to use. Immunizations are complete. Verlin has two of the three visas he needs to live or travel in Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Burkina Faso. On Thursday, Debbie cleared the glitch delaying her Ivorian visa so that it arrived today. Pray that she can get started on the other two visas.
  • One of the Ivorian men we trained in CHE in 2007 and 2012 is himself providing CHE training to some missionaries the first part of February. What a joy to see him stepping up and multiplying workers. Pray that all goes well and every need is met.
  • The 6-week West Africa CHE Internship in Ghana begins in just a few days. One dear Ivorian CHE co-worker is attending. Ask the Lord to give safe travels and fruitful learning to all the participants.

And the Gift Goes on....

One exciting result of training people in Community Health Evangelism (CHE) is seeing how the Lord helps them apply the precepts in their own ministries. G. is a chaplain at an affiliated Christian hospital in Abidjan who received his first CHE training at the university in 2014. In 2015, he returned for more training and
excitedly shared one way CHE helped him bless a family. People frequently come to him with needs, and a benevolence fund is available to help legitimate cases. Before his CHE training introduced him to using thoughts of microenterprise, it was not unusual for him to simply give gifts of money or food.

One day, a lady came to him and asked for help. G. wanted to assist her in an enduring way and increase her abilities while using local resources. He explained his desire and gave her 10,000 francs CFA (about $20). In return, she was to devise a plan to use the money so that it would generate more income for her family, and share her idea the next week. She decided to sell attieke (a favorite dish made from manioc) at a road-side stand. In four weeks, not only had she started the business, but she had turned the $20 into more than $160 (or maybe $320 - a USB key storage glitch leaves the increased amount unclear). In either case, her success caused her husband and children to thank G. as well. G was probably more enthused about her success than she was!  He testified about the CHE approach, “It really works!”

Prayer and Praise:
  • Ask that many other people will boldly put into action the biblical principles of CHE that can bring lasting change to their own lives and communities. It is not unusual for CHE learners to experience persecution and discouragement as they challenge the status quo.
  • One of Verlin’s close friends from childhood lost his wife for heaven’s gain due to cancer last Sunday. We did not attend the funeral in Michigan because of the winter storm and some
needed vehicle repairs. The event reminded us of how powerful a testimony the hope of resurrection is to both believers and non-Christians. Pray that believers' funerals will regularly witness the hope we have, as did our friend’s. Pray for this family and others who adjust to the lost presence of loved ones. We do not grieve as those without hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13).
  • The Lord provided the cheapest airline tickets we have ever purchased for our return to Cote d’Ivoire! Each one was $1,100 instead of the normal $1,400 to $2,000 that has been common in recent years.

Heigh-ho

PDF Version : Anderson_Weekly_160116

Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to work we go!” Unlike some dwarves in a popular old movie, we rejoice to be going TO work instead of coming home FROM it. At last, we can announce some wonderful news. We are approved to return to Cote d’Ivoire because of your faithful prayers and giving! Tickets are purchased, and our multiple visas are in process. Verlin will take a flight to Burkina Faso first and participate in the Million Village Challenge, an initiative sensed by Transform World, gathering there March 8-10. The purpose is to coordinate with other French speaking West Africans to deepen the implementation of Community Health Evangelism (CHE) throughout the continent. After that conference, he will travel south by to Cote d’Ivoire and begin the process of settling in. Debbie’s flight to join him leaves April 9. Verlin hopes to purchase a vehicle before she arrives while Debbie says final good-byes, and sees Corbin on college spring break before leaving.

Prayer and Praise:
  • The CHE training at the Christian Health Service Corps (CHSC) in Grand Saline, Texas finished well on Friday evening. It was a joy to interact with people ministering, or increasing their capacity to minister, in Texas, Pennsylvania, Honduras, Ghana, Nepal, Mexico, and in college. This week at the CHSC home base also allowed us to make sure our paperwork and responsibilities to the mission are in order.
  • The Lord answered all of our prayers through your generosity during the 4th quarter!  After seeing our final December donations this week, we have confirmed that our semi-annual income average surpassed the budget need of $8,000 per month two months in a row. Thank you for helping speed us back to the work in Cote d’Ivoire. As long as January maintains the trend, we are approved to leave for our field(s) of service.
  • Continue to pray for the Lord to provide a trustworthy vehicle.

Two for Texas

PDF Version : Anderson_WEEKLY_160109

New CHSC logo

As colder weather moves toward Tennessee, we will meet it on the road Monday traveling to Christian Health Service Corps’ headquarters in Saline, Texas. This upcoming week is orientation for some new missionaries. Along with several CHSC leaders, we will assist with the Community Health Evangelism (CHE) portion of their training. Even if their ministries are in a professional capacity in a clinic or hospital, new CHSC missionaries are given a condensed CHE Trainer of Trainers 1 (TOT1) before they go to the field. Sessions will take Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and part of Saturday to complete.  And we get the added blessing of meeting some new co-laborers! On Sunday we plan to visit with friends from Welch college days, and return to Cookeville on Monday, January 18.

Family Prayer and Praise:
  •   Ask for safe travels and a good week of training.
  •   Cason and Suzanne’s adoption process has slowed for a few weeks. Last fall documents were not processed by the Department of Child Services for their foster daughter to continue getting state services related to her being hearing impaired. No problems are expected, just more time is needed to let the papers get through the system. Thank you for continuing to ask when she will “officially” be an Anderson! Soon, we believe.
  •   Ask the Lord to continue using Cara daily, while she serves as a float nurse in Vanderbilt clinics. The change of position has allowed her to greatly broaden her nursing skills.
  •   When Corbin returned to Union University for a January term (4 weeks to complete an entire semester class), he was not feeling well. Pray that he will heal completely from some respiratory issues, while keeping up with the accelerated academic pace.

Diving In

PDF Version : Anderson_WEEKLY_160102

Happy New Year, Friends and Ministry partners!

As all of us dive into 2016 serving the Lord, here is a condensed summary of the quarterly ministry report we gave our mission agency, the Christian Health Service Corp (CHSC), last night. It omits many items mentioned previously (1, 2, 3+). The submission took place as we begin preparations to return to Cote d’Ivoire for life and ministry. It dates what God did the last quarter of 2015 through our partnership together, apart from our visits to U.S. churches. The CHSC sustains other medical missionary works around the world, and so we also pass on this information with links to end-of-year (EOY) agency news. These are available to read online, if you click the underlined links for the CHSC email update, or a PDF copy of the EOY mailer. We are blessed to influence lives around the world for Christ with these sent healers. Below are some specifics of what your and our joint effort served to initiate, support, or do together the last quarter of 2015.
  • 12/29/2015 – A pastor friend of FWB heritage shares his intent to pursue using the CHE infused outreach of the Saddleback Church PEACE program in South Africa among refugees, and with pastors in Kenya.
  • 10/13/2015 – The Federation of Evangelical Churches (FECI) president makes plans to train his church in the spring of 2016. He also will promote CHE Training of Trainers (TOT1) to disciple and prayerfully unite evangelical churches throughout the nation in a common effort (mentioned here).
  • 10/12/2015 – A seminary professor who specializes in Church Planting Movements (CPM) commits to begin CHE TOT1 trainings after return from Seoul, South Korea, in January 2016. This is a follow-up to his 2014 Abidjan University CHEngagement training.
  • 10/11/2015 – Leadership of a Port Bouet church renews their program that had been left on the back-burner following the death of a CHE trainer.
  • 10/07/2015 – Leaders of the Ivorian Association of CHE meet to trace a path of training CHE teams so that 200 are active in Cote d’Ivoire by 2021.
Follow-up shared by president of the National CHE Association of Cote d’Ivoire (AISEC):
  • 11/29/2015 – Healthcare Christian Fellowship International (HCFI) decides to train 120 Ivorian members using CHE TOT1 in 2016.
  • 11/30/2015  –  Women’s Cycle of Life Training completed at ARC en Christ in November;
  • 12/5/2015 – Microenterprise training at Kodjokrom as part of University CHEngagement program;
  • 12/12/2015 – God-fearing Family Planning done.
Please pray that we all walk closely with the Lord, redeem the time, renew physical strength, manage our families wisely, see financial needs met, and share Christ clearly.

May this New Year with our Lord be crowned with Godly abundance (Psalm 65:11)
