Taste and See (Psalm 34:8)

While Verlin completed his mission in Ghana this week, Debbie faced a separate array of challenges in Cote d'Ivoire. At times, our "hello from the other side" of the border became content-heavy. Last week, she and our Ivoirian helper sadly watched as both puppies died from parvovirus. (The needed vaccines were unavailable in the previous supply trip to Abidjan.) Also, our female dog in heat gave Deb some sleep-deprived nights to pray while our male Rottweiler tried to reach the female. Then, the hose on the washing machine disconnected, flooding the washroom with water! (Thankfully, that repair was quick.) Blessedly, the Lord gave solutions for these and other obstacles as she completed the storage room project.

On Wednesday, a most thought-provoking event happened. Debbie heard a ruckus from across the street, about 50 feet from our courtyard. When she checked with our co-worker for details, he casually explained that a man was being beaten and cut with razor blades by neighbors and that they might also break his hand. Seeing her shocked look, he explained further. Theft remains rampant in our town of about 100,000, and the population is fed up with law enforcement's response. When a petty thief is taken to authorities, he usually pays a bribe and gets quickly released. The lack of reconciliation or justice makes it difficult for hundreds of small commerces to survive. Hence, the vigilanteism of our neighbors. They decided that a man who tried to steal a package of flooring from a little boutique would more likely stop thieving if they intervened than if he were turned over to overstretched police. They phoned a family member to claim him and took turns flailing upon him for several hours. "He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him." (Pr. 24:24)

Verlin finished his time at the CHE African Internship Center of Ghana in appreciating the work God gives to all which made it possible. He gave thanks and was thanked for coming. In the coming weeks, we hope to share some testimonies that he recorded. Graciously, the Lord gave Verlin a 'safe journey' for return to Abidjan. We expect to gladly reunite Tuesday after he buys supplies and makes some catch-up visits with CHE teams. As the loose, regional CHE collaboration grows, the fellowship plans to establish additional self-funding centers for interns by language, region, and nation.

  • 🙏 Thank God with us for Verlin's safe return to Cote d'Ivoire. Ask the Lord to give safe and hassle-free travels to all other Internship participants. One goes to a nation neighboring Ukraine.

  • 🙏 Pray that Biblical understandings of justice return to preeminence in the U.S. and get better understood for application there, and in all nations, including Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana.

  • 🙏 We join in worldwide prayer for all the people of Ukraine, especially the vulnerable and our Christian brothers and sisters who will face persecution.

For lack of team building, some ministries, companies, and families do not experience the full measure of a threefold cord that is not quickly broken (Ecc. 4:12). One of the things that “wowed” us about Community Health Evangelism (CHE) during our first training in 1998 was the reliance on local and worldwide partnerships. A database containing thousands of lessons remains available to anyone who completes a Training of Trainers 1 (TOT1). In addition, the Global CHE Network connects CHE trainers and users worldwide. When meetings like the Internship in Ghana take place, much networking and discussion share the challenges and successes of individual ministries. For those working in French-speaking nations, we apprise them of more French lessons and our contextualized approach. If threefold cords do not break easily, imagine the strength of thousandfold cords as energized Kingdom of God servants put CHE into practice!

This week, Verlin had the privilege of facilitating five of his six scheduled sessions concerning team building. Before leading any, he got to know the sixteen interns who participate, coming from eight or more nations, by arriving a few days early. As always, the Lord brought people to share information that will bless ministries in Cote d’Ivoire, as our experiences bless them. For example, Verlin met Pascal from Mali on the first day. He “just happened” to begin a Farming God’s Way ministry effort three years ago. As a result, he was aware of that ministry having a formally trained contact who now distributes the authorized translation materials in French for West Africa. We had wondered how to order and get the materials delivered using an affordable process that others could repeat. It is beautiful when God provides team-building help just when we need it!

Prayer & Praise

  • 🙏 Thank the Lord for the good fellowship and exchange of ideas developing and happening during the Internship. We thank God that our Christian brother from Mali connects us to others who use the bible-based Farming God’s Way agricultural training in West Africa! Pray each attendee gains many skills and connections to enlarge their ministries into movements, seeing souls saved and transformed families, towns, districts, and nations.

  • 🙏 Verlin’s ear is back to normal today after his repeated treatment. We appreciate your continued prayer that complete healing will not have to await dental repairs in the U.S.

  • 🙏 Pray for a newly relaunched effort to grow mushrooms in Bondoukou. The first attempt stalled last year and in 2019 because it did not receive a timely supply of promised mycelium. As a result, the team attempts to grow the mycelium locally. This is an important effort to provide startup funds for an Ivorian teammate who implements Farming God’s Way with us.

Cleared empty boxes
with bonus puppy!
While Verlin traveled to and now travels within Ghana, Debbie deals with a dusty heap of empty boxes, among many other containers covered in rodent droppings after long years of storage! She and an Ivoirian co-worker cleared the storage room, getting rid of junk and cleaning as pictured. (The cute puppy is a bonus!) They make room for accessing essential items while prepping for the work of eventual house repairs. It brings to mind the kind of spiritual spring cleaning that we work to keep routine in our lives. Unfortunately, sometimes we hold onto the empty boxes of past events that have been covered by the blood of Jesus. Sometimes unhealthy mindsets clutter our thoughts. Or maybe we cling to some empty boxes of traditions with little or no Biblical basis. How about you? This month, a dreary time for many people, might be an excellent time to “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good” (I Thess. 5:21)—and trash the rest!

Verlin landed in Ghana without complication, thank the Lord! Unfortunately, pressure from his ear infection, apparently stemming from ongoing dental injuries yet to repair, has returned the fourth time. The timing is not ideal as he participates in the CHE internship, but the Lord knew this. So he restarted the prior successful treatment.

The learners participating in the Community Health Evangelism (CHE) Internship often come because they realize they have empty boxes of ministry traditions to relinquish. They desire to solidify new ways of thinking and plan attainable goals. Pray that this month proves to be a marvelous time for equipping and encouraging them as the time has provided others before them.

Prayer & Praise

  • 🙏 Thank the Lord for Verlin’s negative COVID tests and his safe arrival in Ghana! Pray the ear infection again clears with the medications. He hopes to evade invasive action until he can follow up 2020 established relationships with dental and ENT specialists this summer in the States.

  • 🙏 Debbie’s back is greatly improved! Thank you for praying with her. Also, ask for wisdom as she handles daily life in Africa with Verlin absent for a time.

  • 🙏 Keep the month-long Community Health Evangelism (CHE) Internship in your prayers.

Prozac for the Soul

PROZAC FOR THE SOUL

It amazes us what can happen in a mind, a life, a family, or a meeting place when people sing to the Lord. A holy hush, a joyful crescendo, a grateful chorus — it changes life experiences when we obey the Lord's command!! In a world filled with anxiety, cruelty, illness, and strife, isn't it time to fill the atmosphere with truth and praise? Some people mistakenly believe that songs of faith only belong in church services. Not so. Instead, let's keep a songbook with our Bible, at the bedside, in the kitchen, or on the car seat. Any time the Great Deceiver or his minions start to whisper lies, drown out the voices with Biblical truth. Listening to a person praise the Lord is an encouragement. However, the best remedy is to lift our own voices in song. We plan to renew old family habits by singing aloud every day for a month. Would you care to join us? Experience how the practice can impact your thoughts and home. Scattered throughout this quarterly report are verses from selected hymns that we sing and which seem appropriate.

SING & WAIT

The past quarter became unusually laden with health concerns in our family. Debbie's mother spent a three-day stint in the hospital with a TIA. Verlin's mother visited urgent care due to an abdominal wound first diagnosed as sepsis. Verlin's ear infection returned for a third time with enough pain that turning his head was a challenge. One of our sons had COVID but with pretty mild symptoms. Debbie pulled a muscle in her lower back enough to seize, affecting her capacity to work for a week. Verlin recently experienced a robust immune system response to the Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine, the only one available in Bondoukou. Inconvenient symptoms lasted two weeks. The most troublesome chest pangs and abdominal distress passed within five days. Still, the extreme fatigue and weakness continued for more than fourteen days. In 35+ years of marriage, Debbie had never seen him sleep so much!

Thankfully, the Lord graciously chose to intervene with healing or manageable results, although recently, Verlin's mother experienced a setback. Primarily, our best option was to persevere while waiting for prayers, medicines, and nutritional remedies to take effect. Thank you for encouraging us through the process. Please continue to lift up Elsie, Verlin's mother.

We received another excellent response to prayer after longer than three years of waiting. Late last December, we met in person with our landlady's son, who now oversees all property issues for his mother. He verbally agreed for us to proceed little by little in repairing the sixty-year-old house that we rent. After his agent confirms the repairs needed in a visit, we will prepare the written document to legalize and complete a long-term lease. The roof needs replacement, and plumbing and septic problems demand renewal. Besides changing rotted wood and painting everything, certain structural modernizations are also required. Nevertheless, it is a relief to not have to find another place to live. Eventually, we will unpack barrels that have waited in storage since 2016 rather than opening each on need.

January gave Verlin the great joy to return to the agricultural site close to Bondoukou with an Ivorian brother who now holds title to the 30+ hectares of land. Since most of the legal paperwork is now in place to prove possession, M. prepares step-by-step with us to organize the site. The effort will demonstrate the profitability of farming and forestry management concepts taught using Community Health Evangelism (CHE) strategies. The first steps include creating compost piles while prepping the site. In upcoming months interested village Ivoirians will learn the Farming God's Way processes to increase corn production. The model is expected to inform other demonstration farms in the country so that even more people can observe and learn methods for transformative farming. Pray that the results will nourish families, multiply churches, and lead many new believers to obey God's Word!

Verlin accepted the privilege to participate as one of numerous trainers at the CHE Internship held in Ghana in February. Ghana mandates COVID vaccination for entry into the country, so that is why he hurriedly accepted the vaccine two weeks ago. We hope that a false positive during a COVID test before or after flights will not hinder Verlin's travel plans. Also, pray that his fatigue continues to fade so that he can engage vigorously and joyfully with CHE interns.

Our Ivoirian CHE community lost two CHE trainers whom the Lord called Home much earlier than anyone dreamed in the past six months. Pray for these two dear men's families, friends, and ministry partners. One remains unmentioned by name because of the sensitive nature of his work. The other brother, Pastor Tra-Bi, began CHE ministries in southwestern Cote d'Ivoire, which we first reported in 2020. (See Normal is Nice, the Two-Way Street). Unfortunately, the number of highly experienced CHE trainers remains too few for the demand in Cote d'Ivoire. As a result, all teams mourn the loss of those who dedicate ministry efforts to promulgate CHE.

SING IN WONDER

The Lord abundantly provided for our continuing residential ministry through you, our faithful ministry partners! The 2021 fourth quarter giving fulfilled our budget needs for the year. It even added a small reserve so our operating balance can hopefully cover any lower ebbs of giving in 2022. Despite difficult financial times for many people in our nation, you still gave generously! We are grateful for the ability to continue ministry unfettered.   • 🙏 Thank the Lord with us for healings or improvements He brought to our various family members: Debbie's mother, a son's mild COVID experience, Verlin's ear infection and reaction to the vaccine, and Debbie's lower back issue.
  • 🙏 Verlin's mother still endures issues with old surgical wounds. Pray with us for complete healing.
  • 🙏 Keep praying that our Ivorian pastor's wife patiently pursues healing for her severe, incompletely healed stomach ulcers. After discontinuing nutritional remedies for maintenance, her symptoms rebounded with a vengeance. So a few weeks ago, she was taken south for the second time to better-equipped hospitals in the hope of finding lasting relief.
  • 🙏 Pray that the grieving Ivorian families who recently lost loved ones, especially the family of Pastor Tra-Bi and the second unnamed brother, retain their eternal hope. Ask that financial resources develop to adequately sustain the families. Finally, pray that the CHE efforts they started and helped multiply will disperse widely through other servants of Jesus.
  • 🙏 Ask the Lord to remain the blessed Planner and Guide who initiates collaborators and us at the agricultural site using Farming God's Way. Praise Him for granting the legal papers to our Ivorian co-worker, which prove his ownership of the land!
  • 🙏 Please cover the month-long CHE Internship being hosted in Ghana through February. People from all over West Africa and beyond attend for greater familiarization with CHE ministries. Travel across borders during COVID restrictions remains hard.
    - Pray everyone arrives safely without a problem.
    - Ask that Spirit-filled meetings provide strength and wisdom to trainers from various places.
    For us, the immediate need is that Verlin escapes false positives when testing for COVID next week.
