Simple Gifts

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits...Psalm 103:1-2

Will you rejoice with us this week for some unrelated answers to prayer? We are deeply grateful for the Lord protecting friends, and for simple gifts that beautify our lives and help us prepare for upcoming ministry.
  •  Cement drains are just installed on the road right in front of our house. Within months our street may be paved, greatly reducing our red dust and correcting a serious drainage problem in the neighborhood.
  • Rain season is in full swing now, so city water flows to our neighborhood at least every other day, instead of once a week. Copying the mechanics of some missionary friends, Verlin figured out a way to pump water-on-demand from our cistern to the house, and recently replaced a defective part. He has one happy wife who can do laundry any time!
  • Rain season also means plentiful fruit and vegetables at market. You really haven't enjoyed pineapple, mango, or avocado until you eat them fresh in the tropics. Come see?
  • Being home for a few days in a row is a pleasure. This week Debbie and Koffi prepared our second bedroom to receive guests. They also set up a prophet's chamber with an adjoining CHE Planning and Prayer Room in the outside building, and sorted and cleared one storage area.
  • Verlin made progress in connecting with trainers for the fall CHE training at the university. Four training of trainers are planned to happen simultaneously, requiring even more preparation time.
  • Debbie's ultrasound and scan early this week were clear of serious problems. There is a hernia (or two) causing constant pain that will require action.

Prayer Point :

Recently the Lord preserved the lives of the Nassian FWB Church's pastor and family. Pastor Edmond and family were traveling on public transport when armed bandits stopped the vehicle, stole the passengers' money, and shot several people. One person died and others were wounded. This kind of hold-up is not unusual in rural areas. Pray for all those involved, especially the traumatized children. One mother reported that her child is constantly afraid the bandits are coming again.

A Nation's Glue

PDF Version: Anderson_WEEKLY_160618

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads reading this! Your steady provision, protection, and prayer are a glue that helps hold the family and nation together. Never doubt your worth. We are especially thankful for our godly dads, one in heaven and one in Nashville today. They taught us to revere the Lord, and to consider it a joy to be a disciple of Jesus. By their examples of obedience and servanthood, we are helped every day in the choices we make. We enjoy(ed) all the word plays and jokes, too.

On holidays we also think of our three children, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter whom we cannot visit this Sunday. So in addition to ministry issues, thanks for praying for our beloved kids, as they each sincerely seek to follow Jesus in their milieus.

Prayer and Praise :

  • Muslims around the world are in Ramadan, their month of daily fasting. As we ask for strongholds to be broken in those communities, also pray that many will dream of a Man inviting them to follow Him, and then meet people who can lead them to the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Part of the recent Disciple Making Movement (DMM) integration into CHE training that we participated in gave specific and proven ideas of how to befriend and interact with our neighbors of this different worldview. Despite the horrific violence and cruelty reported on the news, the Lord brings thousands to Himself from these groups. Be encouraged, despite Orlando and other brutalities. The Lord grows His Kingdom, and the gates of hell cannot prevail against it!
  • Cason (our firstborn), Suzanne, and Chelsea have been house-hunting in Nashville for several months. The market is expensive and tight; homes that fit their budget and location needs are sometimes snapped up within hours of being posted. They must stay in Davidson County for Chelsea's specialized hearing-impaired classes to continue at no cost. Ask for patience and wisdom as they wait for the right fit.
  • Cara's (middle child) church experienced a difficult six months with the death of her pastor and other trials. Pray for healed hearts and clear guidance. Ask that her testimony as a Vanderbilt nurse continues to flourish.
  • Corbin (youngest child) is working full-time this summer and needs wisdom in time management to CLEP out of two English classes before returning to college this fall.
  • Debbie interacts again with a doctor on Monday regarding an on-going pain that may be related to an infection or a hernia repair. Ask for clarity in what steps to take.

Transforming Touches

PDF Version: Anderson_WEEKLY_160611

Touched does not mean transformed; sometimes it takes many touches to witness a transformation. We now have the privilege of seeing some transformations begin and some continue while yet others start as God continues working through Community Health Evangelism (CHE) to change this nation.

Saturday June 4 we met with the university's CHE leader and wife for the first time as a couple. Sunday we met the CHE trained seminary director then picked up an experienced French missionary couple that have lived the vision we've been given to start in Cote d'Ivoire, if not accomplish, since responding to the call in 1997. It's a delight to meet 'brothers born for adversity' who have also overcome to see God change nations. In their cases, Senegal and Madagascar. They, in turn, marvel with us about God's moving here.

While Martine's medical experience in Madagascar is important to their current service with Healthcare Christian Fellowship International (HCFI), it is also proving to be a concrete help to us in the second of four ministry directions we're shepherding: she provides witness for the training of public health professionals of a Francophone CHE program that has changed how a French established national health care system saves peoples' lives physically and spiritually.

This trip, however, the focus speaker is her husband. Leaders in the national HCFI chapter followed-up last month's CHE training with what it looks like to participate in a Disciple Making Movement (DMM). John formerly initiated and pastored the largest church in Senegal serving through Youth with a Mission (YWAM). He was then led of the Lord out of that established comfort zone of missionary service to see CHE begin changing a nation. He's developed DMM expertise in the process (check this link to understand better this Global CHE Network adopted approach to church planting; it may sprout the discipling ministry for which God has prepped you). After the HCFI training in Abidjan, regional church leaders were trained in Abengourou.

For the Free Will Baptists, and some other trained pastors particpating, this was another touch from CityTeam's ministry and us about DMM (YouTube) and Church Planting Movements (CPM). We pray our local churches here flame-to-fire the spark of understanding that pushed Benjamin Randall and Paul Palmer to start meetings which multiplied to win and disciple believers across states and even nations.

Prayer and Praise:
  • We give thanks and request for continued safe travel as our vehicle has logged more than 3,500 miles of travel between visiting ministry sites and setting up our new home base in 7 weeks.

Pass it on!

This week finds us in Abidjan for Community Health Evangelism (CHE) related activities. On Sunday evening a French doctor and her husband arrive from
Europe to stay until June 14 in Cote d’Ivoire. First they will be the speakers at a seminar at FATEAC in Abidjan (a West African seminary that trained FWB and many other leaders). Then they will travel north to Abengourou to hold a second training session. It will be our role and pleasure to provide their transport and assist with their needs.

As a couple, we too look forward to learning from their experiences. This physician is charged to develop CHE with Healthcare Christian Fellowship International (GBH in Cote d’Ivoire), the group that prayerfully seeks to develop 200 Christian clinics in underserved Ivorian areas. Her experience as a doctor and guiding very successful CHE ministries in other places makes her input invaluable. Likewise, her husband has developed an accompanying discipleship method that has equipped thousands of people.

Prayer Points:
  • GBH trained 22 participants in late April and then May 13-15 in Abidjan.
Participants included professionals from major hospitals in Abidjan like PISAM and CHU of Treichville. CHE trainers will follow up every 3 months to see how they progress in their activities.  
  • We are thankful that the Lord provided Corbin a summer job quickly in between college semesters. 
  • Pray for stamina, safety in travels, good rapport in the meetings, and for clear guidance for those who attend.
