Ounce of Prevention

PDF Version: AWA_Update_180728

http://nafwb.org/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/2018-Convention-Program-1.pdfVerlin just returned from meetings with the National Association of Free Will Baptist churches of which we have been members in covenant (see PDF p.7) since childhood. The speakers and breakout sessions showed the diversity of ministry needed as Christ’s Kingdom advances on earth. The heritage still provides guidelines for us. Diverse subjects covered included elements that treat the whole person in relation to his spiritual, mental, social or physical environment as does Community Health Evangelism (CHE): meditation, worldview development, prayer, Bible study, interventions for child soldiers and school shootings, evangelism, counseling, branding, leadership development, salvation, church growth and many others. Verlin appreciated a longtime friend’s reasoned rejection of Physician Assisted Suicide that led to a group affirmation of the Christian Medical and Dental and Association decision process.

Some people think meetings like these for discussion and re-connection are a waste of time unless concrete goals like gifts or rewards are received. To us, while the overdoing of meetings often leads to counter-productive self-centered promotion, the regular exchange to meet old and new acquaintances is necessary. Just as regular Hebrew festivals refreshed daily obedience, good meetings also help maintain shalom, the spiritual and physical health that is exponentially promulgated by CHE. They provide opportunity to deflate misunderstanding and improve performance. It’s about the prevention of illness in social relationships. The Benjamin Franklin proverb that ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’ rings truer every day. Modern healthcare that is also based upon the Judeo-Christian worldview returns to similarly holistic and value-based delivery systems of care. Just as Jesus did not do for others what they were designed or responsible to do themselves, but stepped in to assist practically or miraculously when the individual’s capacity was lacking, so medical care evolves today. This same process undergirds the practices explained and expressed in nursing by the self-care theories of Dorothy Orem and culture care thoughts of Madeleine Leininger. We find it best to invest the time of our now annually required absence from the field of service to dialogue with God, ourselves, others, and creation, and so improve our modeling of the Gospel presented through CHE.

Prayer & Praise:
  • Missionary kids face a wide range of adjustments as they move to a foreign culture to live. Pray for their spiritual, emotional, and physical protection. They often become targets for various abuses while trying to be good witnesses as their parents work.
  • Corbin has now completed all classes and will officially receive his engineering degree! Please pray with us that he pass his FE exam and finds a job that is a good fit.

Time n Space

PDF Version: AWA_Update_180721

The LORD uses His own space and time to accomplish His will. It’s AWESOME! He coordinates flights, meetings, and encounters so we His people and others outside of our folds, or sheep pens, hear His truth. With thanksgiving we affirm Psalm 23’s declaration that He leads His own in paths of righteousness. He guides us to assist and be assisted in our times of personal need.

Verlin arrived safely to Cookeville after flights and layovers allowed him to share Truth while introducing Community Health Evangelism (CHE) to others paid for humanitarian work around the world with the USAID and the WHO (links are to researched trends CHE starts or reinforces in local settings). No sooner had he landed in Nashville than our youngest son called with urgent car troubles, seeking advice. Only a few hours earlier, and Verlin would not have been available. If it had happened a few days later, Corbin would have been in danger during travel to see us. Similarly, our daughter sees the hand of God guiding her through the aftermath of a car accident earlier in the month. Providentially, no one was injured and the accident happened close to the home of friends who helped. The next day, as she needed wisdom for decisions about the wreck, a police officer arrived for an appointment where she works and gave her sound counsel.

Monday, before Verlin left for the airport in Abidjan, he met for the first time with Dr Thomas, an influential mega-church leader, to share the Million Village Challenge (MVC) and opportunity for CHE training later in the year. An Ivorian friend who promotes CHE accompanied Verlin. Our African brother found he unknowingly had other personal connections with the pastor. Not only that, but the evangelism done through CHE promoted by the MVC matches in detail what leaders in this movement have been looking for as a means to help unreached villages in the nation.

This should never surprise us. After all, “when the fullness of time was come, God sent forth His son…” (Gal. 4:4). At just the perfect moment in history, Jesus came to fulfill His earthly mission. Time and space are in His hand, and so we rest in His providence.

Prayer & Praise:
  • Pray for the National Association of FWB that takes place Sunday through Wednesday in Little Rock, Arkansas. Ask the Lord to encourage His people, and pray that decisions made will honor His name and further His Kingdom in a mighty way. Verlin will attend.
  • Pray for the perfect provision besides the rental car for Cara, our daughter, in a timely way.
  • We enjoyed taking a half-day to relax and celebrate 32 years of marriage this week!

HEPFDC Launch

PDF Version: AWA_Update_180714

We are thankful for the Lord’s strength and the help of Verlin’s mom and many friends to assist Debbie on one continent, while Verlin has run full steam on another lately. On Friday, Debbie was released by her doctor to begin driving and adding in more strenuous activities of daily living. Her knee implant looked good on the x-ray.

Verlin landed in Abidjan today after traveling through much of Cote d’Ivoire during the past 15 days, driving once through the night. Last-minute changes of schedule required such an effort to cover the scheduled promotions of Community Health Evangelism (CHE) ministry. Varied fellowships of Evangelical pastors in different towns were informed of November 2018 trainings, and yet other groups were left invitations to respond to the Million Village Challenge (MVC). The travel also let him interact with a budding CHE team that touches 17 villages, meet others who wish to start CHE, and continue the training of two more churches to in the use of Discovery Bible Studies (DBS). The next four weeks of sessions were delegated to an experienced DBS leader with one who gains experience.

A resource that we received at the International Wholistic Missions Conference of May is the Health Education Program for Developing Communities (HEPFDC). This resource inspired of CHE and developed by Dr Arnold Gorske has been a joy to share with educators who are placed to influence children with the Gospel and better health practices. Verlin started one teacher in Bondoukou to practice-teach the material with a Christian family who will in turn share the lessons during a neighborhood children’s class. He also launched an educator in Abidjan to implement the material in his setting with older teens to see if they can successfully teach it to themselves and others while he awaits a November CHE Training of Trainers (TOT1) to start a formal CHE or Children’s CHE program with fellow teachers.

Prayer & Praise:
  • Pray the educators mentioned save children using the HEPFDC. Ask that many children multiply the learning of these truths that will impact their worldview and future health.
  • Join Verlin in prayer as he continues spending hours to meet and encourage leaders to adopt the MVC. Pray that influential Ivorian leaders met last week and this weekend successfully envision the use of CHE in every unreached, unengaged Ivorian village.
  • Continue to pray for Dr. Luc’s family, and the many others who were affected by the flooding in Abidjan. We rejoice to see calls for disaster preparedness training in the news.
  • Pray thanksgiving. Verlin returns to the States on July 17 for several weeks of ministry interaction and some family time. Thank the Lord for Debbie’s continued good recovery.

Loss and Gain

PDF Version: AWA_Update_180707

The Ivorian Free Will Baptist Church experienced a surprising loss on July 6. Kouamé Philippe Fakéyé, pastor of the Koumassi Free Will Baptist (FWB) church in Abidjan, was found lifeless on Friday morning. He unexpectedly died of a currently unknown cause during the night while completing oversight duties of the Doropo hospital for Beraca, the Ivorian FWB NGO governing the facility. Though aged just 44 years, he was preceded to heaven by a first wife and son and leaves behind a second family. Philippe served Jesus faithfully in FWB churches and had participated in university CHE trainings to plan integration for their wider application with church-growing programs. He will be sorely missed. Please pray for his wife and local flock, especially, as he glories in his newly gained heavenly home.

This week, Verlin traveled to central and western Cote d’Ivoire for Community Health Evangelism (CHE) meetings in several remote places and for conference planning. It looks like we may gain some renewed CHE partners by year’s end from a WEC church plant and some local government medical workers working together in a dominantly Muslim town. At a second location, church members and their CHE team received six hours of refresher trainings to start training their own committee, the unit that directs CHE ministries at the village level.

Years ago we experienced some financial loss by giving an Ivorian businessman a hefty personal loan in 2006 to provide higher speed Internet service in Bondoukou. It did help with homeschooling briefly, but then the friend moved and loan repayments stopped. Verlin saw him during this trip and was pleasantly surprised to receive nearly 1/3 of the amount still owed. These replenish some of the funds we formerly used to test for people of integrity to qualify them for international loans to start micro-enterprises or larger businesses.

Prayer & Praise:
  • Pray for the family of Pastor Philippe, especially for his wife. May all the funeral events and opportunities to share the Gospel and the story of his faithful life provide a vibrant continuing testimony.
  • Continue to pray for those in training to lead Discovery Bible Studies (DBS).
  • Giving to our account has remained below budget the last quarter. Pray with us as we figure out how to connect 20 new ministry partners with this ministry we share at $100 or so a month while actively ministering. We thank the many of you who pray and give faithfully, some who are increasing their help. It’s just time to meet our budget and spread our support base to continue on. We look forward to discovering how this works out. Christ is bringing lasting transformation here because of our co-laboring together!
