Cherish the Treasure

Father, hear us, we are praying,
Hear the words our hearts are saying,
We are praying for our children…

from Prayer for our Children by Amy Carmichael

Heart-wrenching photos of innocent faces slaughtered in Uvalde, TX, remind us to cherish the treasure of children. Treasure the opportunity to influence and protect them, as did the two heroic teachers using their bodies and last breaths in their attempts to preserve their students. Cherish each child’s potential and train them to serve God and respect life. May we learn to cover their anxieties with Jesus’ healing love as we all struggle to overcome evil in our world.

Concomitantly this week, we discussed, and Debbie helped our mission’s founders plan some endeavors intended to bless the missionary kids of Christian Health Service Corps (CHSC). Work will continue on two projects over the summer. Little enables missionaries to continue in service more than knowing their children thrive through the myriad situations of ministry life. Heart-wrenching evil is only overcome by the shalom (© Sarah E. Fisher and hebrewwordlessons.com) brought to all by messengers of God’s goodwill.

Come and See (Psalm 66:5)

Verlin’s enjoyed a positive post-op appointment with the surgeon on Wednesday. The doctor said he could not be more pleased with the surgical results while expressing his encouragement by our ministry. (He participates in short-term overseas medical mission trips with colleagues.) As a result, Verlin was released to resume normal activities, except for lifting items weighing greater than twenty pounds for six more weeks. This lets us start for Tennessee Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, depending on the progress of a few small projects and discussions that we want to finish before leaving Texas.

Visit with friends from college days
In addition to rest and recovery for Verlin, doing some paperwork, we
  • visited missionary friends in Denton, Texas,
  • connected with Verlin’s oldest sister Vicki who “happened” to be in Dallas for a conference,
  • made progress on equipment repairs needed before we return to CΓ΄te d’Ivoire, and
  • spent a lovely evening with dear friends from college days.
As always, CHSC directors and staff received us with unwavering kindness, servanthood, and wholehearted assistance. We cherish the treasure of family, friends, co-workers, and ministry partners who faithfully walk this path with us.

Prayer & Praise

  • πŸ™ Keep praying with us for the Uvalde, TX tragedy and for numerous interventions to be taken nationwide to prevent further carnage of this sort. May the Lord have mercy on our nation.
  • πŸ™ Thank you for covering us with prayers for a safe return to Tennessee and continued healing. Also, ask the Lord to open many opportunities for us to interact with additional ministry partners around medical visits and Verlin’s upcoming dental surgery.
  • πŸ™ Pray for missionaries whose children face difficult adjustments in ministry. Life overseas and new cultures challenge families. No missionary family is exempt from perceiving what seem like impossible situations without the Lord’s help. Ask our Father for wisdom to understand His leading, patience to wait for change and adjustment, and grace to persevere during hard times.

The Persevering

CHSC LINK: The Persevering

PREPARED TO PERSEVERE

God knows our situation; He will not judge us as if we had no difficulties to overcome. What matters is the sincerity and perseverance of our will to overcome them.C.S. Lewis

The country of Ukraine has undoubtedly been a shining example of perseverance and resistance to the world since the Russian invasion in February. What courage and fortitude are seen, including our CHSC co-laborer Carrie Moss, whom we helped train in CHE, and so many others! Even more stunning remains the unending stream of Jesus' valiant soldiers witnessing to us through time. When believers experience seasons of discouragement and distress, let us to the Savior and saints revealed in Scripture and history to maintain perspective. As the author of Hebrews bluntly reminds most of us, we have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. (Hb.12:4)

PRECEPTS & PLANNING
    (see Heroes in Disguise)

I am prepared to go anywhere, provided it be forward. I determined never to stop until I had come to the end and achieved my purpose.David Livingstone

During February, Verlin felt privileged to participate in the Community Health Evangelism (CHE) Internship in Ghana. Leaders gathered from eight (8) or more nations to hone their skills for their varied ministries. "God appointments" were evident as various students and trainers, including Verlin, exchanged. Two Ivoirians who attended the Internship returned home to practice what they learned in vigorous activity that now brings results. Others do the same in Mali, Guinea, Ghana, and other nations.

The Honorable Derrick w/ CHE interns
When training others, one never knows who among the trained will genuinely grasp the truths presented and use them effectively. Sometimes, it surprises trainers who, of the newly qualified, are used by God to share Jesus' living transformation with individuals, families, communities, and even nations via Holy Spirit empowerment and guidance. The bi-lingual Ghanaian Internship program participants interacted with a local CHE champion, a 26-year-old man the Lord chose. The Honorable Derrik showed the interns a village of more than 3,000 people invigorated as he used CHE strategies. He coordinates ministries with other believers in five towns overseen by three community committees. When he began using CHE strategies, he walked to the sites targeted. Later, he rode a bicycle donated to facilitate the work. Because of his effective leadership and hard work, he was elected to represent the government district where he lives, despite his youth. He continues touching base with Verlin.

PRIMED & PUMPED
    (see Ferry Fees)

Do not wait; the time will never be "just right." Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along.George Herbert

Village Transformation
In March, Verlin traveled to and from southwestern Cote d'Ivoire upon new roads to celebrate the life of a deceased pastor. While there, he learned more details regarding how ferry fees bless a community using CHE. In south-central Cote d'Ivoire exists a village that can only be reached by ferry. Pastor S. began a CHE ministry there while planting a church in the past two years. The villagers were aware of many things that needed to change. For example, they had no electricity, school, medical clinic, or latrines. Most importantly, and in addition, the population lacked social cohesion.

The Lord gave them the wisdom to use the resources within their hands! After unifying to build latrines, a new sense of "common-unity" emerged. (Common-unity is a simple CHE definition of 'community.') In their newly found union, they decided to use the ferry crossing fee income to address their joint needs. So far, they have built a clinic, placed solar panels on homes, and continue constructing latrines. The church built a school with three classrooms with their own funds. Best of all, around 80% of the villagers now profess to be Christian. Beforehand, only about 20% of those living there claimed Christ as Savior.

Praise God with us for this remarkable transformation accomplished in such a short time! Having heard the marvelous results in this relatively isolated location, the leaders of this Baptist denomination are committed to training many more pastors in CHE. So may this village continue to flourish and help other communities experience a similar touch from the Lord!

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
    (see Time Crunch)

By perseverance the snail reached the Ark.Charles Spurgeon

It usually takes several years for CHE concepts to be understood and implemented after training an individual or group. However, one denomination we helped prepare in three key moments over sixteen years sees exciting growth for their persistent labor. They now have CHE ministries on the ground in over 60 villages. Twenty of those sixty already have new church starts using CHE approaches. Their missionaries using CHE now go two by two to announce the Gospel in animist and Muslim villages.

Discovery Bible Studies (DBS) now play an integral part in most CHE ministries within the nation. We continue to train people in DBS and follow up with those who remain active. Debbie had the privilege of starting one study the week before we traveled from Bondoukou. The high school teens were open and excited to begin, including the two young men of the other predominant faith in our area. They would never be permitted to attend a church but feel safe studying the claims of Jesus in a home setting.

PATIENT PAUSES
    (see B-b-b-blessings)

Verlin post-surgery
You have faithfully prayed over Verlin's ear and hernia for nine months. What a relief it was to begin closure on the process of his healing this past May 13 with his hernia surgery in Plano, Texas! The procedure transpired with no complications. His recovery thus far has been excellent. Continue praying for his upcoming oral surgery in early June back in Tennessee and his verification that healing is complete for his left ear. We know these pauses play a role in the Father's plan.

Before our return to the States, our Ivoirian partner, who provided thirty hectares for the agricultural project, suffered an accident requiring surgery the week we left. The timing could not have been worse from an earthly perspective considering his health, finances, or the progress of the Farming God's Way fields. As a result, he needs patience and provision on several fronts. In recent months, this same brother facilitated over 80 people in Discovery Bible Study used in conjunction with an effort to train local Ivoirians how to raise mushrooms for sale.

PROVISION EVEN IN PAUCITY

What a trying time we endure as a nation, including financial stressors for so many families. The stress seems to be reflected in the supporting donations made to our mission account during the 1Q of 2022. Unfortunately, the recent quarterly income is the lowest we have received since 2017. While monitoring the situation, we will let you know if things drop near the callback zone. Thankfully, due to abundant December 2021 giving and the incredible faithfulness of ministry partners, our needs remain covered for those three months, and work continues. We keep alert for ways to reduce expenses while pursuing opportunities. Praise the Lord for using you to provide despite difficult circumstances! How grateful we are to Him and you!

PRAYER AND PRAISE

  • πŸ™ Thank the Lord with us for Verlin's uneventful hernia surgery on May 13. Pray that his upcoming oral surgery in June goes well and that his recurring ear infections are done due to prior, effective treatments.
  • πŸ™ Pray for CHE trainers and communities all over Cote d'Ivoire where transformation is in progress. Some situations are challenging. Others experience changes more quickly, like Pastor S. Ask our Father to give wisdom, stamina, and follow-through during the discouraging moments that will be lived. Pray that the strongholds of Satan get demolished in Jesus' name.
  • πŸ™ Ask for complete healing for our Ivoirian co-worker in the agricultural project. The hit by a motorcycle taxi and the subsequent surgery also affects his capacity to progress in the fields and provide for his own financial stability. Pray he finds suitable helpers with family.
  • πŸ™ Debbie's mother, another missionary nurse, pursues some health concerns with a cardiologist in late May. Pray that the issue will be correctly identified and addressed successfully in the coming weeks.
  • πŸ™ Our nation seems to continue on a trajectory of increased hardship economically, politically, and spiritually. Standing for Biblical worldview ideals grows more complex. Let us pray for each other that we will be prepared to persevere and faithfully share the hope of Christ despite the increasing hardness of hearts and persecution.

B-b-b-blessings

PDF Version: AWA Weekly 220514 PDF
Red Barn at CHSC HQ
What a week of b-b-b-blessings we have enjoyed during our first days back in the States! Bush-hogging completed on our Tennessee property just before our arrival made getting around our rural home easy. In addition, the brakes on the fuel-efficient Toyota sedan were fixed just in time to leave for Texas. The picturesque red barn visible in the photo is our home until the end of May at the Shalom Retreat Center, the Christian Health Service Corps (CHSC) headquarters in Grand Saline, Texas. The lodging on the bottom floor of the building with easy access will greatly help Verlin’s post-surgery recovery.

Come and See (Psalm 66:5)

Verlin post-surgery
The team at the Baylor Scott & White hospital in Plano took excellent care of Verlin on Friday during his hernia repair operation. (The hernia developed after his March 2021 appendectomy and started slowing us down in Cote d’Ivoire last July.) Everything went smoothly. The nursing team especially went beyond the basics to assist us. An attentive charge nurse even had a prescription delivered to the recovery room, so Debbie did not have to leave the hospital to get Verlin’s pain medication! A nurse of Nigerian origin expressed interest in Community Health Evangelism (CHE), as Verlin shared about ministry in Cote d’Ivoire. She has family members who work in Tanzania doing similar spiritual/physical integration as they train Africans to share the Gospel. What she described as her uncle’s activities with farming, health, and church planting ministry matches what we know of other organizations using CHE to transform Tanzania for God’s Glory. (Tanzanian examples of CHE abound from Assembly of God, Christian (CMFI), Evangelical Free (Reach Global) and Lutheran Churches, the government NIH funded researchers, non-denominational organizations like Tearfund, the AICHM, and Emmanuel International, and yet others.) Their efforts buttress the examples we use to encourage the diverse Ivorian efforts initiated with the denominational, UFHB and AISEC outreaches that we help coordinate in Cote d’Ivoire. Perhaps more Kingdom workers will be equipped because of the conversations held during travels this week!

Another enormous benediction was the gracious hospitality of friends associated with CHSC and Dallas Theological Seminary. Tim and Lisa welcomed us into their home for three days so that we could be closer to the hospital before and after surgery. How grateful we are for these numerous b-b-b-blessings poured out and the prayers you faithfully offer! Thank you for following with us, even when our witness continues in ways other than we envisioned 15 months ago due to the slowdown. It has been a busy, blessed time 'b'-ing witnesses to our Lord's grace. πŸ˜€

Prayer & Praise

  • πŸ™ Rejoice with us that Verlin’s surgery transpired with no complications! Pray for his complete healing and for us to find a healthy balance of rest and work during our next two weeks in Texas.

  • πŸ™ Ivoirian high school students in their senior year have begun exams to see if they will graduate and qualify for proceeding to college. Testing continues for weeks, with varied schedules for students with different foci of study. Pray the young who profess Christ and who also get very stressed will be able to think clearly, and that their test results will not be impacted by bribery demands.
  • πŸ™ Pray for more laborers in our Father’s Kingdom. CHE workers are needed in Cote d’Ivoire. Many of our CHSC fellow missionaries also have urgent needs for medical workers in hospitals and for teachers to help homeschool their children. No doubt you know the need for Christian workers in your local church.

Conveniently Inconvenient

220507-FirstHomestead-rose-from-a-bush-planted-last-year.jpg
A rose bloom in our yard
reminds us to thank God
for other moms we can
no longer greet personally.
On this weekend devoted to honoring the essential role of mothers, it is an excellent time to reflect on the thousands of conven-iently incon-venient situations our own moms endured and the worries they shouldered for our good. Painful childbirth, sleepless nights, allergy crises, mountains of laundry, thousands of meals, countless prayers, and those frantic runs to the store because we forgot a project due—how precious their love and sacrifices remain even now! We cherish our astounding mothers, Elsie Anderson and Sandra Payne, with enormous gratitude. Our childhoods were bright and filled with numberless blessings because of them.

Similarly, the whole process of our return to the States was full of conveniently inconvenient situations, too. For example, a computer repair mishap closed one door but opened another to plan a CHE training. Although the delays were inconvenient, they conveniently happened before we left. For that, we thank the Lord profusely.

Come and See (Psalm 66:5)

Three additional conveniently inconvenient surprises providentially happened later in our journey, too. First, because our flight was on Monday, we had to get our COVID testing done on Sunday morning—not good timing in Abidjan. The three-hour wait was very inconvenient, and complaints and sweat-drenched clothes abounded. Conveniently, though, we talked with a lovely, Christian young woman while in line. She is an attorney in the Netherlands and faithful in ministry through Youth with a Mission (YWAM). She grew up in Bondoukou, and the family maintains a large, lovely ancestral home there. No one has lived in the house since the United Nations forces left the area years ago, so the home sits in disuse. Just that week, she and her brother had discussed that something must be done about it. When we mentioned that we are looking for a housing situation where owners will give us a long-term rental contract, she perked up with great interest. We exchanged contacts and will check out the status when we return. The home is in a quieter part of town and much more spacious than our current situation. Whether a rental contract works out or not, we all agreed that our meeting was providential and helped pass the time quickly.

We safely arrived home in Cookeville on Tuesday night after 30 hours of flight or airport waits. The Toyota we drive to Texas Sunday or Monday was repaired with the help of kind friends before our arrival. Debbie was outside when Verlin parked the vehicle after running errands. She saw a small stream of smoke rising from a front tire where brake work had just been done. How kind of the Lord to let us discover this conveniently inconvenient problem before our 10-hour trek to Texas! The same day Verlin found an ant invasion in our main bathroom. This was not a “let’s put out a few ant traps” situation but required a full-scale fogger attack to drive the invaders from inside the walls. Despite the massively inconvenient need to leave the house for hours and the additional laundry labor created, how conveniently the ants revealed their presence for eradication before we disappear for a month!

Prayer & Praise

  • πŸ™ Thank the Lord for numerous opportunities to share His truth on our trip. Pray for an uneventful drive to Grand Saline, Texas, where our mission agency’s headquarters is located. Ask for a successful and uncomplicated hernia surgery for Verlin on Friday morning in Dallas.

  • πŸ™ 220507-Roses2all-the-mothers-resized.jpg We bless the Lord for our Godly mothers who, with our dads, reared us in the fear of the Lord!
