Betrayed and Bereft

What happens if someone you trusted is found to be a deceiver? Many people are troubled and saddened by the recent, tragic, and posthumous confirmations that Ravi Zacharias, a prominent Christian apologist, was involved in sexual sin for over a decade. The man who brilliantly defended the Gospel worldwide and encouraged us was himself trapped within a sinful lifestyle. Will the preyed upon victims receive justice? How many of the donated gifts were spent to keep victims from exposing him? To fund his lusts? How does his family's faith hold up? What doubts will arise for the people saved under his ministry? Does this revelation dismiss all he shared as a lie? All truth is God's. Trust betrayal like this causes grief akin to a family death.

Watchful and Warned

What happens if someone you trusted is found to be a deceiver? Hopefully, all of us realize that we could be that fraud. In fact, we are that fraud every time we do not confess falling short of our professed Biblical beliefs. Perhaps our demise might come from a different sin, but it always comes without daily obedience to Jesus and trusting Him to keep us from falling (Jude v.24). All it takes is repeating a lie until we believe it is true:
  • I deserve a spouse who meets my needs;
  • This secret sin does not hurt anyone;
  • My reputation must be preserved at all costs;
  • I am too spiritually mature to need accountability;
  • It is nobody's business how I spend ministry funds;
  • There is no victory for my addiction;
  • My work is so vital to the Lord, He will overlook my sinful choices.
We give thanks for participating in the CHSC that strives to model fiscal transparency and encourages missionaries to have accountability partners. Much time, money, and effort get expended for members' spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being. However, no organization or missionary is perfect. Please know that we invite inquiries and concerns. Contact us if you have unease. Let us build ourselves and each other up in our most holy faith (Jude v.20).

"The Betrayal" by
Osmund Caine
There are ways to be discerning, testers of spirits (1 Jn. 4:1-6; 1 Cor. 12:10; Heb. 5:14). Beware of individuals and organizations that are not vigorously transparent in lifestyle or finances. Be servant-leaders who recognize faults and confess sins. Keep faith by participating in groups like Discovery Bible Studies (DBS), where the norm is to accept queries about personal habits. Pull some from the fire (Jude v.23) by warning them of the consequences of sin, and, so help keep yourself honest. Repent to obey every day. Remember, King Jesus is the only One who never disappoints us.

Prayer & Praise

  • 🙏 Pray for leaders. The enemy likes to see heads of households fall because damage to the Gospel increases. Pray recognized Christian leaders rightly perceive themselves in communion.
  • 🙏 Pray that our relationship as a couple represents our King well in this life.
  • 🙏 We appreciate dear ministry partners who visited us in Cookeville this week. They brought items that can support CHE (Community Health Evangelism) efforts.

Stuck in the Snow

Illusion of fire-ice
Beautiful illusion of fire-ice
As we finished visits and work in Michigan earlier this week, the snow and ice storm struck our home in Tennessee on Monday. Cookeville was hit hard. 14,000 homes lost electricity, including ours. We knew because our younger son, Corbin, stuck it out at home with no warmth despite a neighbor’s nearby wood-burning stove! He endured two nights with exterior temperatures in the teens, then drove to Nashville to visit with brother Cason and his family.

Cara & Fine Fellow
Corbin, Chelsea, & SnowKong
When life gives you unexpected snowstorms, what do you do? Create a friendly family competition! Cara started it in Franklin, Tennessee, with her snowman on Thursday. After crafting her fine, welcoming fellow, she challenged her brother Corbin and niece Chelsea to make a better one in Hermitage. Our granddaughter discovered that being stuck at home in “real” snow is a grand adventure as her Snow Kong built with Corbin took on a weathervane plane!

Struck by the Glow

Ice Covered trees, unfallen!
On Friday, our trip south to Tennessee resembled a winter wonderland, with iridescent trees starring in the show. We arrived home around 10 PM. The storm results were evident, reinforced to us by the electric company’s dismal outlook. The situation even sent our stove-warmed neighbors to a hotel after five-nights. Debbie wrote this update in a hotel while Verlin set up a generator and connected it via a plug designed to provide lights and warm water. Just after he finished the installation on Saturday, city electricity was restored! Priority choices made during the hoopla send our weekly news late.

A more excellent glow illuminates our hearts regularly, too. Churches and individuals frequently give offerings when we make visits, for which we are so grateful. All donations are forwarded to Christian Health Service Corps (CHSC) for ministry uses unless the giver(s) specifically states otherwise. When someone specifies the funds as ‘personal,’ our senses go on alert to identify what might be a ‘surprise’ expense for us. Usually, months go by with no such directive. Suddenly, when we are about to experience an unexpected family expense like a generator this week or physical therapy last year, individuals or churches sense an “urge” to assign us a personal gift. Typically, charitable gifts from all ministry partners channeled through salary and expense reimbursement take care of us. At times, though, the Lord moves His people in unusual ways. This provision reminds us that He marvelously supplies all our needs according to His riches in Christ Jesus.

Prayer & Praise

  • 🙏 Time is running out to finish necessary errands and purchases before Verlin leaves. We stayed in Michigan two days longer than expected due to the southern power outages and travel hazards. Pray that we can complete tasks quickly and calmly in Tennessee before travels to Texas.
  • 🙏 Corbin has had an upswing in engineering interviews. Continue to pray for his job opportunities.

AUTHORITY TO GO
(see Every Season)

His authority on earth allows us to dare to go to all the nations. His authority in heaven gives us our only hope of success. And his presence with us leaves us no other choice.John Stott

Once again, it is our privilege to "dare" more years of serving the Lord in Cote d'Ivoire. Verlin's ticket is purchased to depart on March 7. Debbie will follow likely within the month after Verlin has our vehicle operational and has evaluated the circumstances that affect our local and travel ministries.

Once again, we go, knowing as Stott worded it, that "His authority in heaven gives us our only hope of success." Whatever any disciple achieves is accomplished only because of Jesus' power, while using his earthly abilities and gifts. Once again, we recognize that our going and serving this way relies on your obedience to serve, pray, and give. Thank you for sharing abundant life in Jesus with Ivorian people and people groups!

AUTHORITY TO ACT
(see Great Assists)

Prayer is the risen Jesus coming in with His resurrection power, given free rein in our lives, and then using His authority to enter any situation and change things.Ole Hallesby

According to some of our Ivorian contacts, life in Cote d'Ivoire's interior has mostly returned to normal despite COVID-19. Life in Abidjan still requires more significant restrictions because of the large population living in close proximity. Nonetheless, the nation reports only 30,526 cases with 171 deaths through the World Health Organization as of February 12. These low numbers seem inexplicable to some health professionals who fail to identify life circumstances that diminish COVID-19 replication.

Even during the pandemic’s zenith, teams using Community Health Evangelism (CHE) strategies continued working within the confines of the law to share the Gospel and best health practices. They saw great results during 2020, as we reported in our last quarterly. On the broader scale of all of West Africa, we heard this summation from Dayo Obaweya, a Nigerian who serves as a West Africa Coordinator and Chairman of the Global CHE Network's Representative Council. In a recent Facebook post, he revealed, "This year witnessed more people accepting Christ during our programs all across West Africa. Despite the pandemic, we executed more programs than the previous years. More empowerment training, discipleship training, photography, crusade organization, and several more. Thank you for helping us do more…"

We are incredibly blessed to work in collaboration with hundreds of people who "use His authority to enter any situation and change things," as Hallesby encouraged. Praise the Lord that His authority transcends natural and man-made hindrances. We press forward to the mark set by Jesus-Christ with the assurance of His power.

AUTHORITY TO SERVE
(see Light and Lift)

God has work to do in this world; and to desert it because of difficulties and entanglements, is to cast off His authority. It is not enough that we be just, that we be righteous, and walk with God in holiness; but we must also serve our generation, as David did before he fell asleep. God has a work to do; and not to help Him is to oppose Him.John Owen

Practically every month of our time in the States, we received encouraging news from Ivorian associates using CHE. One recent Ivorian report revealed the activity of a new CHE team in the west formed by some of whom we have trained. One team leader is a local pastor who completed a month-long CHE internship training in 2019 that followed some CHE training sessions with us in 2017. Other CHE-trained teammates followed up with him due to his affiliation with Healthcare Christian Fellowship International (HCFI).

After the training, he began to visit leaders in the numerous villages of western Cote d'Ivoire. He evaluated their openness to the Gospel and CHE per what he had learned. After completing several Awareness Meetings by December 2020, some villages decided to press forward. They initiate to reforest areas where brush fires have caused severe damage and to provide literacy training. The team helped them identify the resources needed in terms of people, material, time, and some Ivorian-managed finance so the eager local residents can launch their redemptive work. Their next step is to train village committee members to direct the program and Community Health Evangelists known as CHEs (prounounced 'chays') who will make visits with the local household leaders – moms and dads! We rejoiced that one of the ladies we trained in early 2019 at a medical facility is a dynamic member of this growing team.

This week's phone call confirmed that the children's Discovery Bible Study (DBS) ministry has restarted outdoors in our neighborhood. Children eagerly come for the Bible and health teaching.

AUTHORITY WITH JOY
(see Garments of Praise)

Authority exercised with humility, and obedience accepted with delight, are the very lines along which our spirits live.C.S. Lewis

The word "authority" in our world frequently carries negative connotations. Distrust may stem from abuses of power that people have seen or experienced. Without the Holy Spirit’s help, people cannot exercise authority with humility. Instead, their human efforts tend toward oppression, hypocrisy, or the destruction of others' identities. However, faithful disciples never abuse Jesus' power. As they submit to Jesus commands, His authority operates through them in holy (i.e., distinct or separate) and appropriate ways.

Why bring up authority, you may wonder, in a missionary newsletter? We simply want to remind any reader that no one needs to fear doing the will of God. If He calls you to a task that feels scary, even if it is missionary service, He will equip you to do it while never leaving you nor forsaking you along the way. Do not miss out on the joy of following Him. No human authority can ever match the kindness, uprightness, and compassion experienced in the communion with Christ.

AUTHORITY WITH PROVISION
(see SOS & SOP)

The summary of giving during the previous quarter is available on the third page of the PDF copy. Give thanks to God with us for this display of the Lord's amazing grace to provide through fellowships of believers! Donations made during the 4th Quarter of 2020 lifted the sub-account cash balance to where we will leave for Africa with good consciences in respect to our God-given responsibilities. Since beginning with the CHSC in December 2013 and going through February 12, 2021, donors have sent 2,124 gifts to support this ministry through the CHSC! Nine of ten individuals or groups who have given continue to give regularly or on occasion. The monthly giving average is within $500 per month of meeting our budget since our refocus in service with you in 2014. These are phenomenal numbers. We do not exaggerate when we say that our ministry partners are among some of the most faithful and generous people imaginable. We simply report what is measurably true! Thank you for walking the way with us.

PRAISE & PRAYER REQUESTS

  • 🙏 With all our hearts, we thank the Lord and you for the prayers and sacrificial gifts enabling us to return to Cote d'Ivoire with an assurance of God's leading! May our Father multiply your joy and capacities to bless His work in future contexts.
  • 🙏 Give thanks to the Lord also for the extraordinarily meager price of Verlin's return ticket through an agency that serves Christian workers: $442.10! This is less than 1/3 to 1/5 of what we typically pay.
  • 🙏 Pray for our families as we make another extended separation. We are grateful that both sides of the family wholeheartedly embrace our calling, but the goodbyes are never easy.
  • 🙏 Pray, trusting the March legislative elections in Cote d'Ivoire will not deteriorate to destructive riots. Unease about some particular, unresolved political issues continues there, as here. Request for peace from strife among men so the Gospel can spread unhindered; that Ivorian daily life will allow individuals to consider and accept Jesus' claim on their life.
  • 🙏 Ask the Lord to direct our resettling into African life and routine. There are many adjustments — including the heat and getting the vehicle and appliances in good working order — that take time. Also, there will be many unanticipated adjustments which we will undoubtedly have to manage.
  • 🙏 Continue to pour out prayers for the many workers using CHE strategies to bring the transforming authority of Jesus-Christ's to community and society. Pray for protection, fruitfulness, and stamina.

Music Therapy

PDF Version: AWA Weekly 210206.PDF

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.Colossians 3:16

Soul Lifter

Singing does a world of good. Research continues to reveal the physical and emotional benefits of singing. The numerous results are positive. They merit further study. However, for believers, the impetus stems from more than acknowledging advantages to our own bodies and minds. We sing in obedience to our Lord's commands. We sing as an overflow of our adoration. We lift heart and voice to convey lasting truth to ourselves and those who follow. To further consider the "why" for singing, review this article by Tom Olson, who pastors the Orchard Evangelical Free Church in Illinois. Singing is a gift from God to us; it is also a gift to God from us. Letting a virus, disease, politician, stress, or persecution rob us of this privilege hurts us further still than the ill. Many seem to despair at the condition of our country, licking politically based wounds. When we sing the truths of God's Word, healing can take place. Let the hymn therapy begin!

Truth Teacher

Singing does a world of good. The truth revealed in a song inscribes important messages within the mind and heart. Jingles, not meant to have eternal importance, stay in our heads when they are put to a catchy tune. Who else remembers from childhood, "My bologna has a first name…?" A favorite session in the first week of Community Health Evangelism (CHE) training shares the importance of using stories and songs. At the end of the lesson, a team will share their own story or song created to convey a truth. Memorable and hilarious results regularly occur.

Debbie has a favorite song (in French, here at 6 sec) she frequently shares when teaching that lesson. It is a children's song learned from Janie Aldridge, a pioneer FWB missionary in Cote d'Ivoire. The lyrics to the ditty tell how soap can wash our face, hands, and feet, but the blood of Jesus is even greater. His blood can wash us on the inside; it cleanses our hearts. From university doctoral students to illiterate mothers in the village, Ivorians have asked her to record the song on their mobile phones as an example for themselves. Memorable songs convey powerful spiritual and physical truths through generations of believers. Never discount the power of singing.

Prayer & Praise

  • 🙏 We have not received the final word that credit was applied to the purchase of an airline ticket for Verlin. It is a story too long to share, but pray that we obtain a good result this week.
  • 🙏 Remember the CHE trainers in Cote d'Ivoire reaching out as volunteers in difficult circumstances.
  • 🙏 Cote d'Ivoire's travel threat was raised to level 3 in recent days. Terror threats on the country's northern border and legislative elections in March were the primary cause for the change in status. Ask for peace that the Gospel can freely be shared and daily, worshipful life resume.
