Painful Goodbyes

PDF version: Anderson_WEEKLY_150530

Community Health Evangelism (CHE) in Cote d’Ivoire lost a great champion this week. Pasquier Deahon entered the Lord’s presence due to a severe asthma attack. We grieve with his Abengourou family, church, clinic, and denomination. He served in multiple roles, including those of CHE team leader, clinic administrator, and active church member. He and his wife were expecting
their first child in six months. We came to know him better as CHE began to expand in the nation. He helped us train teams in Bondoukou, villages, and at a university in Abidjan. Pasquier was a joy to know and with whom to serve others. He enabled many Christian NGO and churches to more effectively witness and serve. The void he leaves is large, but thankfully we know the Lord does not take someone without creating opportunities for His glory to be seen in other ways. Beyond all the talents he offered in many settings, we will sorely miss him as a friend. He's been a "brother of another mother.” Pray that his legacy will bring many to a greater understanding of the Jesus he served here and now serves in heavenly places.

We have other prayer needs this week, as well:

•Planning for the September 2015 CHE university training continues with the importance of having alternate trainers apparent. Ask the Lord to provide substitute trainers and to give wisdom as we eliminate 7 hours of training.
•Pray for a short-term medical team being led by new missionaries of the CHSC who must now flex to accomplish planned work around the absence and funeral of Pasquier.
•Corbin has been applying and interviewing for summer jobs. Ask the Lord to provide him enough work to pay his portion of college costs next school year.
•Praise the Lord, our trailer has been placed! There are several projects that we need to finish before we can move our belongings, and time is pressing.

Because of impromptu travel to accommodate site construction, our quarterly report is delayed. Thank you for upholding us during this hectic season of activity, and for your faithful gifts that have and will reap a great harvest in West Africa! Thanks to the Lord's provision, we have only drawn a poverty-level salary for health insurance needs to date this year, and the remaining contributions continue to be set aside for West African ministry and reimbursements. Once the trailer setup is complete, we can once again plan services with more certain timeframes.

Verlin and Debbie

Lasting Change

PDF version: Anderson WEEKLY 150523

How does lasting change come to a needy village or city? Many people invest money and resources in lauded projects to just "get it done." Relief is short-term help given during times of crisis, trying to return a person or community back to its normal state.  Americans excel at providing relief. We have trained and led the world in helping communities and nations recover from natural disasters, famine, war, and other crises.

Still, the world’s problems are not solved in providing relief! In fact, when we give in contexts where development is more appropriate, cultures of dependence, entitlement, sloth, corruption, and helplessness take deeper root. The same Scriptures which tell us to remember the widows, orphans, and prisoners, also clearly state how to do so including other principles: if a man will not work, he should not eat; those who do not provide for their families are worse than infidels; the godly refuse bribes. Even Ruth’s story demonstrates a help other than a welfare mentality. She worked hard in the fields, and her kinsman considered it his duty and privilege to help. Community Health Evangelism (CHE) recognizes differing roles for relief and development, but focuses on development.

CHE communicates Christ and His transforming power to a community. Change that is passed through generations happens as people’s hearts and worldviews change. This is not done by giving a gift or constructing a building. Such activity often reinforces self-destructive worldviews.  In CHE, people are equipped to discover how the Lord has provided all they need for life and godliness where they live. Fatalism is replaced by hope, sloth by hard work, corruption by honesty, entitlement by servanthood, and dependence on men by trust in God. Development is a time-consuming and long-term commitment to see people take responsibility for their choices, increase their skills, and bring fruitfulness to their communities by obedience to God’s Word. It is pure joy to see this transformation occur. In the end, the people become blessed so that they prove, in turn, to be a blessing to others from their capacity to do relief and development.

Prayed Progressions

PDF Version : Anderson_WEEKLY_150516

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners,

It is a blessing to share a PROGRESS report on several issues we asked you to pray about.
  • Praise the Lord (PTL): Last week the ground was dry enough on family
property for the land to be cleared. Placing a house trailer on it will allow us to demonstrate a permanent residential interest in the U.S. That permits us to purchase markedly more affordable health and medical evacuation insurances.
    Pray this finishes by mid-June.
  • PTL: The Women's Cycle of Life training Debbie pursued in Phoenix greatly increases her ability to minister and train others to use Community Health Evangelism (CHE). The Women's Cycle of Life CHE curriculum directly deals with women’s health issues and addresses gender inequality from the perspective that we are created by God and created equally. Teachings from the Bible are used that show both men and women are wonderfully made in God’s sight. The lessons are basic and simple to teach, making them easily transferable. Pray they become widely used in Cote d'Ivoire after our return to residence so that lives are saved and churches planted as is being done with farming, micro-enterprise, and clinic-based CHE programs.
  • PTL: Cason and Suzanne (our son and daughter-in-law) have successfully completed some adoption classes and three house visits from the Tennessee Department of Children's Services. Hopefully, the scheduled May 26, 2015 meeting will finish with our future 2-year-old granddaughter being placed in their home. After six successful months serving as her foster parents, the adoption process could be finalized. Pray the remaining steps go smoothly.
  • PTL: Corbin successfully completed his first year of college and returned to Nashville this week. Pray his summer of work further develops his life and work skills.
  • PTL: Monthly financial support is being added regularly to our mission account.
About $1,000 more per month was promised in the last 9 weeks. Your prayers make a difference. We thank you very much and ask that you continue to Pray as we estimate still needing the equivalent of 30 partners at $100 per month.

Healthy Moms Choose CHE

PDF Version : Anderson_WEEKLY_150509

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners,

This Mother's Day, Samaritan's Purse encourages the support of programs that focus on the nutrition and health of women. Community Health Evangelism (CHE) trainings and material provided the start for many of these programs (i.e. Liberia, Cambodia & SP Canada, Papua New Guinea, Kenya). Such interventions focus on discovering local resources to help the poor develop their own materials and skills to exit poverty.  This week’s less than 2 minute video features Wayne Grudem, a well-known theologian and an author of The Poverty of Nations:  A Sustainable Solution. Listen as he explains what happens when nations put into practice the Ten Commandments.

A FWB pastor trained to do CHE in Cote d’Ivoire requested special prayer this week. A five-year-old girl was terribly burned recently on the torso. Her father and mother were saved less than a month ago during house visits in their village as the area's CHE program re-initiates. Clearly, the enemy is trying to hinder the gospel taking root in this church-planting effort. We'd appreciate your prayers for the little girl, the family, and the village. Pray that the team will effectively use CHE lessons and teach heads of households how to build efficient and protected fires too.

Mandate to Move

PDF Version : Anderson_WEEKLY_150502

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners,

This week we celebrate God’s activity through the lives of ministry partners in Cote d’Ivoire whom we have discipled or influenced. While Debbie pursued Women's Cycle of Life CHE training in Arizona, Verlin participated in meetings in Florida but was also able to speak with co-workers in Cote d'Ivoire. We will share the news from one pastor, and save the rest for later. Thank you for your prayers, as the Lord continues to bless the efforts of Ivorians.

Moringa Oleifera leaves
Frank has moved his family and newborn to be with his maturing daughter in a community farther north. As a pastor who promoted the provision of God through moringa oleifera leaves to both heal and adequately nourish themselves, he witnessed an isolated church significantly increase the number attending and their influence in the village. Red Cross volunteers adopted the project after the blessing of the chief; more than forty attendees were added to the local church. Now more villagers praise God for the provision made freely available that they can develop themselves at will. Many children’s lives have been saved physically; many more bless Christ as their Lord for His provision. Frank currently seeks land for a project to grow several plants and trees together in arid land. Corn and legume products can be quintupled and tripled in regional production for those who are learning Farming God's Way with its biblical and technical instruction and with reinvestment of their own labor, resources, and profit.

Please remember Frank and other unmentioned team members in a brief prayer now for their wisdom, protection, and faithfulness in daily walking with the Lord.
