The Long Haul

PaynesThe Lord blessed us with services in the Cookeville area for three consecutive weekends. This week, while Verlin renewed contacts and took steps to counter the attempted identity theft, Debbie spent some time at her parents sorting and preparing for a move. It was her joy to be with them on their 60th wedding anniversary! She reflected on some habits they have exhibited over the long haul. A few to consider are listed below:
  • Say thank you often and sincerely for daily chores accomplished.
  • Opposite personalities can accomplish much together in the Lord's work if each partner is committed to the same goal.
  • Love and commitment are not proven by lavish gifts, dates, or shared hobbies. They are demonstrated in sickness and health and working together through hard times.
  • Do not disdain your spouse's family. Treat them with the same respect you show yours. While acknowledging faults and working to overcome them, appreciate the strengths of each.
  • Enjoy the simple blessings of life together: a beautiful sunset, a good meal, an encouraging song, a task accomplished.
  • Be creative with what you have, rather than longing for things you do not have.
  • Make Godly choices for your family, whether others agree with it or not.

Connection Sustenance

This was a week of not being able to connect in conversation with Ivorian ministry partners. Still, we noted an 11.8 million dollar grant from the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations was awarded to Cote d'Ivoire this month. They purpose to develop zero-deforestation cocoa production since Cote d'Ivoire now has one of the world's fastest rates of forest loss. Also, UNICEF actively engages partners to promote health and hygiene there since the COVID-19 crisis began. We trust Community Health Evangelism (CHE) practitioners will sustain their entry points being reinforced by external agencies and build-up efforts in the national educational arena long after UNICEF leaves. These updates and accompanying emails provide for sustained exchange. Only by continuing habits over the long haul will transformation endure.

Prayer and Praise

  • As of August 27, Cote d'Ivoire reports 17,603 COVID-19 cases, 15,941 recoveries, and 114 deaths. Ask the Lord to give them the wisdom to continue and expand healthful practices.
  • Pray for the Ivorian presidential elections scheduled for October 31. The current president's decision to stand for a third term triggers widespread unrest and protests. Also, pray solutions are found for now annual flooding in Abidjan. Many lose their housing and belongings due to ineffective water management efforts. We have friends touched by flooding every year.

Happy, Healthful Plans

Sometimes the good we need to accomplish is hindered because we fail to make the process a pleasant experience. Debbie recognized this concept while with our granddaughter for a few hours. Chelsea could not wait to show grandma her new face mask with a funny face on it, and exclaimed, "I love to wear it!" She joyously and unnecessarily wore it on and off for much of the together-time. She is learning to overcome challenges while making pleasant self-expressions.

James Clear, author of Atomic Habits: Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results, echoes this principle in chapter 15 of his book with the story of an American public health worker who visited slums in Karachi, Pakistan. Stephen Luby and his team knew the simple habit of washing hands makes a huge difference in a community's health. Most people living there already knew handwashing to be a good health habit, but the majority washed hands incompletely, infrequently, or not at all. His team partnered with a soap company to provide sudsy, pleasant smelling soap to many homes with home instruction to improve the handwashing experience. After a few months, results were phenomenal. Diarrhea fell by 52%, pneumonia by 48%, and impetigo by 35%. Six years later, the results were still long-lasting. Over ninety-five percent of the households which had been given soap continued the practice, without free soap, of having a handwashing station with soap and water available. When we make what is necessary enjoyable, our commitment becomes easier to fulfill. We may even find others who want to join us.

Helping Hands

Those of us who follow Jesus infuse hope, joy, and inventiveness with proactive or responsive ideas to pressing difficulties. CHE processes help participants create washing stations and even lyrics for a handwashing song to pass along disease-combatting values. Creatively sharing 'Tippy Tap' solutions and Discovery Bible Studies, CHE practitioners transform often perceived tiresome tasks like handwashing and family worship to fun, encouraging, and transformative social experiences. These examples represent two of more than 10,000 witnessing and service ministry experiences that CHE Network lessons teach, infused with a Biblical worldview. They equip the willing to make the process of reconciling the world to Christ a more pleasant experience.

A pastor friend in the Cookeville area blessed us with much help recently. He helped make our fundraising process a pleasant experience by introducing us to potential ministry partners.

Prayer and Praise

  • Rejoice with us for faithful giving during the summer months. Our ministry account has not taken the typically annual dip during the past three months. We also appreciate the friend who takes the time to introduce us to other pastors and possible ministry partners. We hope this decreases the time it will take us to gather the remaining $1,100.00 needed in monthly pledges.
  • The first two weeks of virtual school for our granddaughter went quite well. We thank the Lord for that, as we continue to pray for educators and students who face difficult situations.

The Frauds Abound

They walk among us, not wanting to be noticed yet fully committed to their goal. It was our sorrow to encounter one second-hand this week, one who will cost us over thirty hours of frustration. We are talking about a fraud, or team of frauds, who recently used Verlin’s identity to seek a U.S. Small Business Administration loan for $117,800. Thankfully the Identity Shield team of LegalShield reported this attempt at identity theft. After hours on the phone, filling out paperwork, and making a report to the sheriff’s office, among others, Verlin completed the first round of activities to protect our name and assets. Have you ever wondered how much good could be done if hackers and frauds invested that same level of know-how, time, and energy for some holy endeavor? The possible outcome boggles the mind. Through our prayers together, pray that Jesus wins over some of these souls.

The Faithful Astound

They walk among us, not wanting to be noticed yet fully committed to their goal. It has been our joy to meet many such people firsthand over the years. We are talking about faithful servants of Jesus whose lives resonate with love, obedience, and productivity.
LovemoreZulu
Transformative soul-winner
Linked by his name and photo is a six-minute YouTube testimony completed with a Community Health Evangelism champion and trainer from Zambia, Lovemore Zulu. This brother is now home with the Lord, probably exchanging praises of Jesus with some we have been privileged to know and train. May the brief yet informal interview conducted by Terry Dalrymple (Coordinator of the Global CHE Network Service Team) with Lovemore encourage you. How many people do you know that turn down a government position with salary in order to freely share the Gospel? Or who would regularly walk 15 kilometers one direction to train CHE workers without pay? We seek those called like Lovemore in Cote d’Ivoire. We do not have to wonder at the outcome of this holy endeavor. The outcome boggles the mind and encourages us to pray, “Do it again, Lord!” Pray Jesus wins over more such souls through our joint, prayerful efforts.

Prayer and Praise

  • We are grateful that the attempt to fraud using our personal information did not succeed. Pray that we do not miss any steps to protect our identities, so no other attempts occur.
  • Thank the Lord with us for servants like Lovemore Zulu (click here to give to a memorial fund). Ask the Lord to continue consoling his earthly family. Praise Him for the many around the world who give up easier ways of life to serve the Christ. Pray that His hand of protection guides them. Ask the Lord to raise up new generations of faithful servants who do whatever it takes to share the transformation that Jesus alone does with individuals, families, communities, and nations.
  • We were glad to learn this week that the university team is meeting again for CHE planning. Widespread rioting in Cote d’Ivoire broke out as the president decided to seek a third term.

Caring in Cote d'Ivoire

Constant display of the Christ's Love in Cote d'Ivoire
Constant display of the
Christ's Love in CI
Constant display is the Christian way. COVID-19 provides an opportunity for the Church to put the love of Christ on constant display. Our acts of service and attitudes bring hope to many people who struggle with fear and illness. We rejoice to hear how Community Health Evangelism (CHE) trainers in Cote d'Ivoire share the Gospel while giving instruction in COVID-19 awareness. In Abengourou, one CHE team has touched 600 families so far. Twenty individuals have chosen to confess Jesus, including two souls from Muslim families.

In one setting, the team gave the Gospel and health instruction to a community of 100 drug addicts. Pray for believers in many places who reach out in tangible ways to hurting individuals and communities.

Cookeville Connections

In Cote d'Ivoire, we are accustomed to being the only Americans in a town of over 100,000 people. Our lives are on constant display. However, we did not realize until last week the extent to which this is also true in Cookeville, our hometown in Tennessee. Debbie drove the seven miles into town to work out at the gym and run some errands. The same evening, Verlin received a text message from a local friend and pastor. A lady from his church saw Debbie driving and noticed that one of the rear wheels on our red van wobbled. Because the church member did not have our phone number, she informed her pastor. He passed on the message to us! It turned out to be a loose hubcap, but the rear bearings needed to be replaced too. We were grateful to learn about the problem at home, rather than on a lengthy trip. It was also a humorous reminder that our lives are on constant display, no matter which continent we roam! Constant display is the Christian way.

Prayer and Praise

  • Thank the Lord with us for the lives touched through the COVID-19 outreach in Cote d'Ivoire! Pray for the twenty people who became followers of Christ through this CHE ministry, especially the two former Muslims who likely will face some form of persecution in that setting. Ask the Lord to give the CHE workers continued strength as they work.
  • Ivorians continue to ask us to pray for peaceful elections.
  • Debbie strained her ankle last week and continues to have some mobility issues. Pray that the tissue will heal quickly and not cause problems during our upcoming travels.

CLING TO HIS CANDOR
(see Travel Tips to Trust)

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

Numbers 23:19

Our holy and loving Father comforts us because He does not lie. Unlike social media activists and aspiring politicians, His words ring true—always. He is the Truth. Accordingly, the Lord does not distort reality or abuse people to gain power. His Word brought our world into being, and He exercises control over the universe through its power with unfailing consistency. Only when He speaks again do current processes change. The steadiness of this Word-framed worldview undergirds the scientific understanding that now prevails in our world to identify the cause(s) of disease, create vaccines, and let us soar above the earth's surface in metal machines. Everyone experiences a world of improved order and beauty due to either an a priori understanding, or a growing one, that stems from their knowledge of the Lord. Knowing Him in person and through life in community is the beginning of wisdom, the discovery of truth for life.

Conversely, the Lord's unfailing Word rings warnings. People who deceive, destroy, incite hatred, applaud evil, or otherwise gradually die in disobedience experience His wrath. Apart from choosing to repent, or change their self-focused manners of thought, their self-imposed doom is as certain as the daily sunrise. The mouth of the Lord has spoken. He has determined by His Word what can and will be. For that reason, we choose not to fret about those who selfishly do evil now (Psalm 37). We do not want, in any way, to pitch a tent in that camp. Instead, we seek to use our lives and resources to promote truth for life that yields good. Thank you for partnering faithfully to let Ivorians hear and understand the choice that we each have!

CALL ON HIS NAME
(see Checking Upstream)

Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

Jeremiah 33:3

This week we spoke or exchanged with Ivorian ministry partners. As always, we rejoice to hear their news and learn how Jesus uses His children who press on and overcome obstacles. Your prayers break down strongholds and speed them on their way.
  • A teacher who is a Community Health Evangelism (CHE) trainer began a Discovery Bible Study (DBS) in a village. The witness to Jesus-Christ, the Word of God made flesh, by followers had dwindled to a small group of believers who met irregularly. Within two weeks of starting, another person decided to become a disciple of Jesus as they met in Bible study! Recently, those who began the DBS visited other villagers who formerly claimed faith in Christ. Some of these now join the DBS and begin other study groups as a renewed fellowship of heartfelt obedience to God takes hold. We did not ask for the number of converts yet. Criticism of the teacher for not starting in another location indicates some jealousy over the growth in number. The village church using DBS has long been considered a satellite ministry of another community, and that church now wants to be trained to begin DBS! A participant who came home because of COVID returns to Abidjan this week. He plans to begin a study there with his neighbors in the city.
  • E., the president of the CHE Global Network affiliated Ivorian CHE association, continues tirelessly to work and bring hope in Christ while raising awareness of COVID-19 prevention approaches. (See CHE Network site for training and a Corona Virus Disease manual being used by Ivorians and their churches.) E.'s team received $18,000 of the $20,000 from West African and French donors, although he initially sought funds from the CHSC (See Feasting Crisis.) As they received the gifts, they began a radio broadcast to identify local places where health needs and COVID responses could be addressed. He and the affiliated CHE team have trained pastors and local missionaries in ways developed to help churches and villages deal with the virus. They create and distribute example kits of locally produced masks, hand sanitizer, and other bits of help.
  • K., the brother in Christ who watches our property and dogs, reported that churches meet again with 200 or fewer people. Police occasionally come to take pictures, making sure that congregants maintain one-meter social distancing and wear face masks. The children in his DBS class that gathered under an avocado tree in his courtyard ask almost daily when they can hear his Bible stories again. He assures them that as soon as possible, they will resume meetings. He also expressed sadness for believers who did not know how to lead DBS at home during the pandemic. Because they depended solely on the Sunday church services for their spiritual food, their faith and outreach to others weakened. He has known the joy of seeing the faith of many strengthened in this time.
  • Pastors in western Cote d'Ivoire, trained in CHE right before COVID-19 hit, also used the DBS approach during the lockdown. They broke their churches into 300 smaller groups that met. (See Normal is Nice.) The number meeting doubled before ten weeks passed!
  • Just this week, unrestricted travel resumed from our town of Bondoukou to Abidjan, the coastal economic capital that is 440 kilometers further south. Fifteen reported cases of COVID-19 exist in Bondoukou. Nationally, as of August 1, there have been 16,047 cases,102 deaths, and 11,428 recoveries. International flights resumed in mid-July with some restrictions.
  • The CHE university training scheduled for mid-September is postponed until next year because of the difficulties of travel imposed due to the virus. (See Follow the Leader.) This cancellation allows us to continue visiting individuals and churches through the fall without interruption.

CONSIDER HIS KINDNESS
(see Wind 's a Blowin')

Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

— Romans 2:4

Not only does the Lord's goodness lead the obedient to repent, but the kindness of His people is a constant source of blessing and encouragement. While our country experiences riots and turmoil from political polarization, we have been wrapped in the generosity of faithful ministry partners. Thank you so much for extending welcoming arms to us, which is not only for our sake but for the Ivorian people to know and share the life given by our Savior.

It has been our joy to visit friends and partners while giving reports in Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia during the past six weeks. Of course, COVID-19 has complicated the process, but "where there is a will, there is a way." Sometimes the meetings have been on front porches in masks to protect those at risk. Other times, we have met during services using creatives ways to social distance. In all circumstances, the Body of Christ has blessed us with good lodging, delicious food, sweet fellowship, and funds to offset our costs of travel. The upcoming months will find us if the Lord permits, in Virginia, West Virginia, Florida, Michigan, and Idaho.

COUNT ON HIS PROVISION
(see Grace Touches)

The young lions do lack and suffer hunber; but they who seek the LORD shall not be in want of any good thing.
                — Psalm 34:10
Donation Report

Progress stalled toward reaching the goal of adding $20,000 to replenish our cash balance to $45,000 during church visits. The added funds need to be added before we return to the field for another 3 to 4 years to jump-start some educational ministries. The stall occurred due to canceled travels during March, April, and May. The shortfall might be met in another way over time by some new monthly donors as we stay a few months longer than planned. Despite the reported financial crises in the U.S., several new partners have recently pledged financial support. Our diminished expenses while here, accompanied by some one-time gifts, let our operating cash balance stay nearly level since we made the 1Q report. Over our years in ministry, funds available for ministry typically diminish during the 2Q. We appreciate the love offerings given as we continue to share ministry reports. The Lord's faithfulness assures us that He will touch hearts to supply the $1,100 average in monthly support still needed.

PRAISE & PRAYER REQUESTS

  • The Prime Minister of Cote d'Ivoire died from an illness in early July. He was a presidential candidate for the election scheduled this fall. The president in office has returned to toying publicly with the idea of running for a third, unconstitutional term. Ivorians desire peace, and no cheating during elections. Pray to that end, as you intercede that stoked volatility ceases in our own nation.
  • Praise the Lord that we received an airline voucher for our defunct tickets initially purchased for an August 7 return. Since we have seen only about one-third of our ministry partner base, we now expect our return will be in January and February of 2021. In that way, we can confirm that donations given annually by partners during the 4Q will lift our operating cash balance over the needed $45,000 threshold to sustain 3½ to 4 years in Ivorian residential ministry.
  • Rejoice with us that the request made by our son and daughter-in-law regarding our granddaughter's schooling was approved! This related to what is best for Chelsea as a hearing-impaired child. The positive outcome came only after an appeal and supporting letters from several others involved in her educational process. This victory does not address her schooling situation as to whether she can attend class at school. Both of her parents are essential workers. They face a dilemma like many others.
  • We asked you to pray for our Ivorian pastor's wife, who suffered a stroke last year. She was taken to Abidjan about a month ago for testing. They discovered an ulcer. Since she started taking appropriate medications, she feels better. Continue to pray for her complete healing.
  • Pray for us to have good health, continued safe travels, and Spirit-filled meetings with individuals and churches.
