Living Stones (1 Peter 2:4-5; Luke 19:40) [NOTE: This update's verse references link to GotQuestions.org.]

Grassroots CHE TOT1
near Monrovia, Liberia
A group of living stones gathered to learn their role as priests for others and thereby declare God's glory to the clueless and faithless living in Liberia last week. Living as water-giving stones for Jesus intertwined as a sub-theme for many lessons facilitated. When Jesus accepted vibrant recognition on entering Jerusalem to worthy acclaim, He stated the very stones would cry out if people who knew His works did not! The era's worker class extolled the wonder of Him whose testimony arrived before his person. The 5-day Community Health Evangelism (CHE) Training of Trainers hosted at the New Gate Center near Monrovia by the Ngenda family led some Liberians to appreciate Jesus' current work in Cote d'Ivoire. Some began to see their way forward to advance. Still, only time will tell of the impact or lack thereof upon the gathered spending October 18-23 together with two Western and three Liberian trainers. As one recognized in his closing testimony, humble obedience paves the way for God's great works to be known (Audio Testimony - 1'11").

Stoned Lives (Parable of the Sower)

Before consenting to go, Verlin had doubts the week could fruitfully use his time in West Africa. People accustomed to others paying their ways never cut paths through difficult times that others will follow except coerced or cajoled. Then, the efforts do not replicate by their own power. Souls of good volition voluntarily extend themselves to enthusiastically clear the thorny weeds of human distraction and clean the rock-strewn grounds of shallow planning that is required. These make the paths of life that lead to profitable fields of good works. One formerly thinking salaries paid by outsiders could create enduring change helped Verlin. He ended testifying that his thinking had changed. Verlin hopes the 10-day trip and two weeks' preparations may prove worthwhile (Audio Testimony – 1'40"). Still, time will tell.

Being Stony (Isaiah 50:7)

Jesus paid the ultimate price for everyone to know ways of truth that bring abundant life. All who shelter their spirits in His enabling Spirit's guidance endure life's storms with calm. A young evangelist garnered understanding to light his path forward as the TOT-1 completed (Audio Testimony - 0'52"). An elder pastor germinated gritty courage with words when enjoining others that perseverance overcomes (Audio Testimony - 2'25"). Like our suffering Lord set his face like flint to do what had to be done, Christians the world over copy his gracious grit. This must be so that the witness of His Grace reaches all so some might believe and be saved. Thank you for helping clear stony ground with flint-faced disciples who develop to turn hard, fallow ground into fertile soil yielding abundant harvests. Many who read and pray these updates serve as stones of ballast for our lives and those of whom we touch, much like the drogue stones many think kept Noah's ark righted. Thank you. The Scriptures cited here formed many during the TOT.

Prayer & Praise

    • 🙏 Debbie arrived safely back to Verlin in Cote d'Ivoire with no travel problems. She also was able to get her CPAP machine's necessary adjustment two days before leaving! Already the change of pressure has improved her sleep and may assist in regulating her blood pressure in the long term.

    • 🙏 Verlin's trip to Liberia passed through some COVID era transport problems but enjoyed good interactions and training sessions. Thank the Lord for the 14 daily faithful amidst a total of 20 persons who participated. Pray each perseveres in finding appropriate local resources to grow CHE ministries there.

    • 🙏 Houses for Debbie's parents and our daughter Cara sold within a week of being put on the market! Pray the Paynes' bodies strengthen as they adjust to life within their new ground floor apartment and that Cara settles healthily into a new Tennessee town during mid-November.

Weed Wars

Sprayer & conquered
driveway weeds
Debbie arrived to see an unwelcome sight at our homestead in Cookeville. Weeds had overtaken our driveway. Some had thick stems over three feet tall! Thankfully, the friends who drove her from Nashville were in a truck, so they could pass. Unfortunately, the man who usually brush hogs our property (using a Bush hog) was delayed three months because of heavy rain. Finally, he cleared the jungle last week, allowing Debbie to spray weed killer on what remained along the 240-foot long gravel driveway.

Taking up chores that the other spouse typically handles is challenging when we are separated by thousands of miles. Debbie will gladly relegate the weed war to Verlin next time! During the hours it took to learn the sprayer and pump the weeds, she pondered how weeds are like sin in our lives. How much easier it is to pull small weeds before they entangle and strangle good plants, not to mention the time saved! It can also discourage seeing how untreated weeds spread into new areas. Our lives incur high costs when we do not deal with sins or poor habits at inception or before conception! [We use examples of weeds when facilitating CHE lessons on the Kingdom of God drawn from Matthew 13:24-30]. Unforsaken sins contaminate new areas of life, touching other people and impeding progress. When the weeds get removed, though, we are gratified by clear paths with beautiful and helpful plants that flourish instead!

Wisdom's Way

In the upcoming weeks, we will experience several new kinds of events and situations in ministry. We seek Wisdom’s ways in every decision and trust you to cover us in prayer. Verlin travels to and within Liberia for the first time, helping with Community Health Evangelism (CHE) training in English. We do not know if he will be able to establish an Internet connection which affects our capacity to send updates. Soon after he returns to Cote d’Ivoire, a Zoom meeting with a university class in Florida will occur. Debbie expects to complete numerous time-consuming tasks before returning to Africa in late October. We also must consider and make decisions regarding some Ivorian co-workers and weeds that need to be tackled. All of these events and decisions will require extra infusions of Wisdom and creativity.

Prayer & Praise

    • 🙏 Verlin left for Liberia Saturday to participate in a CHE training. He will return to Cote d’Ivoire on October 25, while Debbie’s flight arrives on October 28. Pray for Spirit-filled meetings and for him to have clarity as he teaches in English instead of French!

    • 🙏 Debbie has a time-sensitive adjustment needed on medical equipment. (CPAP machines limit heart disease risks.) Pray that the adjustment can be made next week, leaving a few days to test the changes before she boards the airplane. Getting medical needs accomplished is always a challenge when time is limited.

    • 🙏 Pray for our daughter Cara, as her house just went on the market, and she expects to close on a new home in November.

Cleanup Champs

CHSC LINK: Cleanup Champs
As Major League Baseball begins the playoffs, Verlin read an improved joke:
Q: Where is the first baseball game in the Bible?
A:
In the big inning, Eve stole first, Adam stole second. Cain struck out Abel, and the Prodigal Son came home. The Giants and the Angels were rained out.

Batting Cleanup

The fourth batter in baseball line-ups gets named the cleanup hitter for the sake of hope: the coach trusts him to meet the moment with some play to get some prior batter(s) to Homebase.

Our God coaches believers to meet our moments in getting others to their eternal home. Verlin got sent to encourage a young pastor and church leadership into growing their congregation beyond the walls of their space-limited meeting place. These are some taught following the Disciple Making Movement (DMM) training of December 2018 with Jean-Marc Fritsch. Deb kept the faith growing in the family, laboring in love to help her parents, children, and husband as she deepened her self-understanding of blood pressure management.

Battling Chatter

Top L to low R: Tank leak, vehicle chains
& oil, hip, and water supply fixes got done.
When at-bat, each hitter deals with opposing team chatter trying to distract him from the essential: keeping his eye on the ball. Each batter must focus on the priority to meet the moment, often forsaking any self-protective focus to swing.

That's our challenge each week. Life oft' seems to stream the 'WAWA' principle of 'West Africa Wins Again.' Water, medical, and transport repairs slowed Verlin's follow-up with other ministries. Still, we know by faith that Jesus adjusts batting rotations to make other plays. Verlin preps travel to Liberia to train others there using Ivory Coast experiences. Debbie focuses on readying return.

Be Champions

While champion cleanup hitters play essential roles, they do not win games or series. Victory and defeat belong to the team. Good cleanup hitters participate. Relationships that players build while developing skills create the potentials teammates can realize when pulling together. In the end, champions play coach-directed roles. They collaborate to execute called roles.

Similarly, the believer's coach puts us in life's play to achieve optimum experiences to see Jesus' plans. The CHE lesson, "What is Good Health?," focuses on what humankind finds by the Holy Spirit's power concerning abundant life. Optimal human experience demands embracing the four covenant relationships to self, God, others, and Creation. The Great Story video by Il l'a dit explains this witness. It describes God's coaching for us to build lives living abundantly. French friends Jean-Marc and Martine Fritsch started us integrating CHE with DMM using Discovery Bible Studies. The Great Story video (YouTube EN, FR) shares the cleanup role God sends believers to do.

Prayer & Praise

    • 🙏 Pray for the UFHB CHE training team as they advance while increasing their 'cleanup hitting' responsibilities. They, like all-volunteer training teams, need prayer for safe travel and strength.

    • 🙏 We appreciate the prayers breathed for Eddie and Sandra Payne as Debbie and other family assisted them to move to a single-story dwelling. Pray their strength and vitality increase.

Counsel

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.
- Proverbs 20:5

Concluding Counsel

Our daughter Cara cited the above Biblical proverb as part of her comments during the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management commencement (link to pic) a week ago. Each graduate was given one minute to share what the Master of Management in Health Care program meant to them during the ceremony (see 20:44-21:28 of the ‘ceremony’ link). Cara thanked faculty and classmates for an exceptional year of interaction and accumulated counsel that helped her “draw out wisdom” to better serve patients. Her well-articulated words reminded Debbie that knowledge is never the end-all of education or CHE training. Wisdom for life is only obtained when learners comprehend how to elicit or draw out counsel obtained by others to learn practical, life-changing ways.

Creating Contacts

Meanwhile, Verlin busied himself with many activities, including preparing for the upcoming CHE training in Liberia. After three nights in Bondoukou, he spent five days in Abengourou to reinforce our small pickup’s towing capacity and get some lights rewired. He also paid some bills while securing some credits accrued during our 2020 absence and helped some Ivorian friends develop their retirement income options that could not be done in Bondoukou. Finally, he ended the week planning another CHE Training of Trainers with a church fellowship in Abidjan.

Verlin got surprised by a phone call from a Kenyan professor who lives in Florida. Last January, we visited a childhood friend of Verlin’s who works at the Gulf Coast Florida University College of Education. They grew up together on the same street in Michigan. Tom gave our ministry description to a colleague who hails from Kenya. For months, this man could not get out of his mind what he read about ‘What if God lived in our village . . . ‘ and our reported use of CHE strategies. He finally used the listed phone number to call Verlin to get acquainted. As a result, Verlin tentatively agreed to share by Zoom during a comparative education course about CHE strategies, thinking initially that the request focused on comparative communication. The professor is also president of an association of Africans living in Southwest Florida. He expressed interest in how they may assist in an educational endeavor in Cote d’Ivoire.

Prayer & Praise

    • 🙏 We thank God that some medical exams Debbie took this week indicate that her heart is not involved in a blood pressure issue she works to regulate.

    • 🙏 Thank the Lord with us for Deb's safe arrival stateside to participate in Cara's graduation celebration.

    • 🙏 Pray for the preparations and details of the upcoming Liberian CHE training in mid-October. Thankfully, Verlin’s visa is already approved.
