Press on

PDF Version w/ financial summary:
God has so ordered, that in pressing on in duty we shall find the truest, richest comfort for ourselves. Sitting down to brood over our sorrows, the darkness deepens about us and creeps into our heart, and our strength changes to weakness. But, if we turn away from the gloom, and take up the tasks and duties to which God calls us, the light will come again, and we shall grow stronger.--Lettie Cowman (missionary and author of Streams in the Desert)

Missionary histories thunder with examples from clouds of witnesses that encourage each generation to “press on” in building God’s Kingdom on earth. One such couple was Charles and Lettie Cowman. They served in Japan, co-founded the OMS (Oriental Mission Society), initiated two Bible Institutes, and launched an outreach with co-workers called Every Creature Crusade that revealed the Gospel to sixty million Japanese. When his health failed, they returned to the States, where Lettie wrote a devotional called Streams in the Desert while caring for her husband. Over the decades, it became a Christian classic and sold millions of copies. She also served as the OMS president from 1928 until 1949. This faithful couple “pressed on” (Hosea 6:3) to know and proclaim the Lord through service. We have sprinkled some quotes from her first devotional throughout this update.

“The trials of life are sent to make us, not to break us.”

Pressing on Through Problems

The Cowmans and others’ recorded efforts also help us to keep perspective! Verlin’s return to CΓ΄te d’Ivoire in May revealed a small horde of lesser problems to surmount while he resumed CHE activities and reconnected with Ivorian co-workers in mission after a long absence. A dangerous or non-functioning range, freezer, entry gates, screens, furniture, and vehicle have been repaired or replaced. Getting bridges over new roadside drains on two sides of the lot is half done, but the done half lets us use the vehicle from our rented place. Mice continue to be chased from the house, and fiber Internet service was restored. Friends and neighbors visit for advice. This report updates readers on the work’s finances.

On the other side of the ocean, Debbie dealt with her own unexpected list of house repairs: a refrigerator replacement, a dryer repaired, two plumbing issues revealed, gutters cleared, a gas regulator installed, and a multi-year-long complicated backup power issue that nears resolution. Two more repairs by the end of August should complete the house repairs. Last week, a Legal Shield lawyer consulted about her father’s final financial affairs assured her that she has done her “due diligence.” Praise God! One season of responsibility is past.

In July, a CAT scan and MRI revealed a non-cancerous growth on her left adrenal gland. However, it occasionally secretes excess hormones, which causes unpleasant symptoms. Medical counsel will likely recommend monitoring her situation until next summer and then having a repeat CT scan to see if the lesion has grown, changing the recommendation to surgical removal at that time.

“God is there already. All the tomorrows of our life have to pass Him before they can get to us.”

Pressing on to Providential Appointments

The Lord keeps opening doors to expand ministry with populations of other faiths in our area. Pray we will wisely discern and invest in people called to teach, preach, or otherwise minister effectively amid them in months to come. Verlin now prays with focus upon preparing the CHE expo and week-long trainings of September 7-11. In the past two weeks, he has spent extensive hours coordinating with others on new lodging, recruiting trainers, communicating with the university team leaders, sending trainers’ schedules, and providing online access to lessons they will facilitate. A record number of students have pre-paid for the week-long, 35-hour trainings. We plan for three or four level one classes (TOT1), a level two class (TOT2), and a level three class.

This update includes our first and second quarter 2026 financial reports. With grateful hearts, we cannot give thanks enough for the faithful ministry partners who have prayed and given for 28 years! However, our account balance is the lowest since 2014 because of increased expenses over the last three years of caring for family while splitting duties across the Atlantic. After expensing the university CHE trainings, we expect only a little over $10,000 left in the mission account. Pray with us as we consult the Lord and others about this situation and evaluate how best to advance ministry.

Pressing on in Prayer

  • πŸ™ The much-heralded university Expo and training takes place September 7-11. Pray the almost-yearly endeavor continues to influence national health agencies and uncounted communities.

    Thankful for you!
Thank the Lord that Deb’s adrenal gland growth is non-cancerous, though it produces too much cortisol. Pray for effectual wisdom to manage symptoms through lifestyle changes.

  • πŸ™ After September's emphasis on university trainings, October's focus will be on getting a third CHE agricultural project launched, this one in the Bondoukou region. Pray that the excellent practices spread faith in our Creator and Lord.
With grateful hearts in Christ,

Taste and See (Psalm 34:8)

That world outside there is not waiting for a new definition of Christianity, it's waiting for a new demonstration of Christianity. — Leonard Ravenhill

The vast majority of social media and news outlets alarmingly portray the Christian faith as forming transphobic, homophobic, xenophobic, ignorant, and uncaring individuals! Instead, Christians have demonstrably been the people caring for the poor, ill, and outcasts throughout centuries of history. This lie told in every generation has only one remedy: unbelievers need friends who exemplify Christ’s love for the sinner and hatred for sin. They need to hear the glorious Gospel of truth demonstrated in our daily lives.

Last month, Debbie received a book to help us address this issue directly and provide current contextualization to promote use of CHE lessons. In The Path to Flourishing, the author Randy Creswell succinctly summarizes how current scientific, moral, and cognitive evidence points to Biblical truth. Creswell’s short summary (only about 100 pages) reminded Debbie of a longer, wonderful book entitled What if Jesus had Never been Born? by Dr. D. James Kennedy, with one exception. In his research, Creswell concentrated on non-Christian scholars to present his proof that the Biblical way of life leads to human dignity, compassion, equality, and purpose in life, to name a few. If you have family or friends buying into the lie that the Christian life is hate-filled and deeply prejudiced, The Path to Flourishing may help you, too.

FWB national meeting
Verlin keeps preparing for six weeks in Abidjan. He attended the Ivorian FWB National Association meeting of delegates Thursday through Friday until midnight. It gave opportunity to meet with church leaders, speak to several people about teaching at the university CHE training, and learn of current projects and ministry concerns. He was pleased that a retired education leader has been tasked with getting the Christian school in Bondoukou up and going. That has been a national FWB project for many years, plagued by many differing setbacks.

Debbie completed her last adrenal test Monday night through Tuesday morning. She should know the results next week, but expects to be released to return to CΓ΄te d’Ivoire, with a few caveats. Several projects need to be completed with Verlin’s supervision overseas (a generator not working properly and a water pressure regulator installed), in addition to preparing our home for our extended absence.

Prayer & Praise

  • πŸ™ Verlin will be away from home for most of the next six weeks, meeting CHE trainers to give them lessons and then handling responsibilities before, during, and after the university Expo training of Sept. 7-11. Pray for safe travels, good preparation, and Holy Spirit-guided and empowered interactions.

  • πŸ™ Debbie completed her last adrenal test this week. Unless the results are extreme, she expects to be released to return to CΓ΄te d’Ivoire. Before this test, the doctor’s thoughts were to watch her symptoms for a year, get another CT scan next summer, and check the size of the adrenal tumor. If it is growing, or symptoms remain or increase, she might have the left adrenal gland removed. Until then, it remains a watch-and-see situation.

  • πŸ™ Pray for the successful opening of a Christian school in Bondoukou. It has been a national FWB project for many years and has experienced numerous setbacks.

Taste and See (Psalm 34:8)

Free Will Baptist women have had a rich history of serving their communities, nation, and world since 1873, when they officially organized as the Women’s Missionary Society (now Women Nationally Active for Christ — WNAC). One such endeavor provided funding and teachers for Storer College in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia, a school that educated former slaves. Helping mission endeavors has been a definite passion for over 150 years. Debbie loves every opportunity to share with local, district, and state groups, as they serve Christ with prayers, projects, and provisions, locally and worldwide.

Love in action!
This week Debbie had lunch with a long-time friend and ministry partner who serves in the WNAC in Michigan. After a lovely time sharing ministry and family news, she mentioned that Verlin found our sheets in poor condition and our spatulas broken. WNAC groups regularly ask about home and ministry needs, and how they can help. We knew these gracious ladies would discuss the situation and do something, if possible. Imagine Debbie’s surprise when this friend and another sister from her local church arrived at Verlin’s mom’s house three hours later with three beautiful sets of sheets in the correct sizes and a wealth of spatulas! This kind of speedy, generous, and heartfelt partnership makes offering hospitality and home comfort much easier in a nation with no Walmart.

Come and See (Psalm 66:5)

Verlin busies himself prepping food, clothes, and teaching materials for travel. He supervised the replacement of rotted ceiling or roof supports while filling out an expense report. The wobbly gates protecting entry to the walled property got new framing square bars, replacing the cracked and rusted ones. Screens were mounted to allow air circulation between the house’s patched roof and ceilings. A FWB church member now engaged by local government to rectify local land attribution stopped by to learn of texts explaining USA exceptionalism and to discuss local issues. Some locals took counsel to evade a Ponzi scheme on hearing God’s plans for cash. Verlin also connected with CHE trainers in preparing for the week-long September training at the university.

Debbie enjoyed her week in Michigan with family and ministry partners, returning home to Cookeville on Thursday. She happily spent Wednesday night in Elizabethtown, KY, where our third child, Corbin, works. Friday’s follow-up with the endocrinologist revealed that most of the lab results were normal. She will have one final test for cortisol levels, since that was slightly high.

Prayer & Praise

  • πŸ™ Thank the Lord for safe travels and ministry partners who quickly helped provide items for us to offer hospitality in CΓ΄te d’Ivoire.

  • πŸ™ Praise the Lord; most of Debbie’s adrenal tests came back within the normal range, except for slightly high cortisol. She will have another test this week.

  • πŸ™ The FWB Ivorian national association meeting is in August. Pray that decisions made will honor the Lord and extend Gospel witness. Verlin will visit, traveling to sites of CHE programs to deliver lessons and discuss the details of the university training in September before and after.

Seed Theology

Taste and See (Psalm 34:8)

260801-Dad-baptizing-Cara
Eddie baptizing Cara
Monday would have been Eddie Payne's (Debbie’s dad) 87th birthday. Our daughter, Cara, wrote about things she learned concerning personal growth during the season of his passing after observing a 30-foot tree which had pulled up a slate boulder within its root system during a winter storm. We share a portion of her thoughts below, but you can read the entire essay shared on Debbie's Facebook wall.

... even in his dying, Grandpa served to me as a reminder of true life.

You see, life doesn’t happen without death. A seed falls to the ground and dies, and as it grows it brings forth fruit. If a seed refuses to “die” it “bears alone”—it just stays a seed—it will never produce the growth and fruit it was meant to.

Life, true life, comes with sacrifice. If there is such a thing as an easy life, it’s probably not worth living. If life doesn’t cost you something, can you say you really lived? My grandpa was no stranger to sacrifice…Yet that sacrifice wasn’t for nothing...

You see, death has no power. It may feel like an intimidating force, but for those who have hope in life, hope in the God who writes growth into the very DNA of creation, we understand His wisdom that death is just the means to life.

Death, even this mortal life we live, it’s just a big rock, a hurdle, an obstacle to growth that, if we have the wisdom of that young sapling, will just grow in spite of. There will be death of old lives, of dreams, of relationships, and if we are wise, death of self. But death will be swallowed up in the victory of the power of resurrection life.

Because the power of life that is deep in us may seem quiet, but it is mighty. It is the power of resurrection. Death is just the means to enter true Life. It’s just the beginning.

Come and See (Psalm 66:5)

Verlin traveled south this week to pick up our truck and two appliances that were in Abidjan for repair. He met or conversed with leaders to arrange for trainers and their lodging for the September 7-11 CHE trainings scheduled in September. A record number of university students are enrolled. The vehicle traveled well and will be ready for cross-country travel for on-site visits with far-flung trainers or repair of the leaking pickup-bed cover. He also visited with several local church leaders. Debbie made it safely to Michigan, where she visits with Verlin’s family and our ministry partners.

(On returning home today, Verlin installed the replacement range and repaired freezer. He found the Haier gas oven, after regulation for butane use, now provides a baking temperature range of 240°F to 425°F, better than the constant 450°F when first used nearly a month ago. He expects to test the freezer Monday after the new compressor's oil drains back. Replacement was a covered by the warranty of paid prior work.)

Prayer & Praise

  • πŸ™ Thank the Lord for safe journeys. Pray for Debbie’s travels as she returns to TN midweek.

  • πŸ™ Preparations for the university CHE training have kicked into high gear. Pray trainers free their schedules to meet the demand.

  • πŸ™ Please pray for our dear ministry partner friends, several who are facing life-changing events: death of spouses, parents, and children, onset of dementia, major surgeries, amputation, cancer recovery, and spiritual warfare. They are family to us, and we lift to the Father their special needs, just as they have prayed for us over decades.
