The Matrices

PDF Version: AWA_Update_190427.PDF

Years before he ever saw The Matrix on a language blocking DVD player, a friend approached Verlin and said, ”Mr. Anderson, I presume.” He was not the first to so address Verlin, nor the last, but he attempted to explain the movie’s plot that led Verlin to take some time and watch part of the movie series years later.

Prior to that, Verlin learned by experience of Matrix Organizational Structures that are used in many corporations and hospitals with their strengths and weaknesses, which interestingly also exist in cohesive family units having a mother and a father. The movie represents the abusive strength of collaboration and the error(s) that happen when a family or a corporation or a church or a nation consider their group of relations as THE social matrix solely capable and meritorious of extending their rule to all others. (In reference to another age, living in your own matrix is like living in your own tribe with your own chief or boss.) In the movie, complicity with this is taking ‘the blue pill’. In reality, we all live amidst a plurality of matrices that God made for us. He lifts and debases each to manage the earth confided to our joint care. He even illustrated this in forming our bodies where each major organ, having a separate and complex organizational matrix, must coordinate from the head for the good of all. Even that is a complexity we’ve yet to fully understand! Unfortunately, the movie’s ‘red pill’ solution is not a solution. It presents adherence to another parallel, conflicting matrix, struggling for a separate existence, as being noble. It seemed to represent that life’s fight is where real living happens.

There no practical way to use that analogy in the real kingdom created by the one true God who sent us the Christ to redeem those who receive Him and the Holy Spirit who guides us to salvation in order to see His rule come to reign our world. We live in times where many have rejected Him and when each human social matrix pridefully strives to become the single dominating matrix, redoubling the baked-in sinful destruction of our fallen world. Ecumenism and the League of Nations all failed by misunderstanding the application of there being no ‘One’ except Jesus Christ.

The solution: we die to ourselves and our own ambitions as seeds. We carry our cross to find its burden light. Then, as every family and corporate matrix must be united in His common goals to develop healthily, a uniting, long-term vision becomes necessary to evade useless conflict and make sustainable gains for the matrices of the nations. For such change to last, it is not coerced, but willfully chosen. The CHE Global Network is a bold effort recognizing that God regulates the matrices. He transforms lives and communities through the seamless integration of evangelism, discipleship, disease prevention and community owned development. CHE evades the failings shown in the movie and the World Council of Churches. These posit uniting everyone under the rule of a human ‘one’. There is only one ‘One’: Jesus. We live or die to Him.

Prayer and Praise
  • Please continue praising the Lord and sustaining the Discovery Bible Studies (DBS) around Bondoukou in prayer. Some mature and divide. Some not dividing do not realize they will die if they do not. Some have not yet revealed their bent. Verlin still does not have an accurate count due to much travel.
  • Pray for Emmanuel Konan, the President of the Ivorian CHE Association (intro @ Fret Not). Hobbling together financial resources from several different organizations related to CHE here, he leaves in the week for the Kansas City International Wholistic Missions Conference (Workshop Tracks).

She's Alive

PDF Version: AWA_Update_190420.PDF

Our celebration of Jesus’ death and resurrection this weekend is not merely one of tradition as is true among so many religious people. It is one of power that is demonstrated regularly in newness of life that becomes remarkable to others. God truly lives among us by faith in His Son. He brings peace to all who will trust to receive Him. With joyful recognition of this work Jesus does, here is a testimony of conversions out of the more than a dozen Verlin heard this week.

Thursday was set aside for scanning expense report receipts and two appointments. The second meeting spent as much time in prayer as in conversational planning. A Disciple Making Movement (DMM) group leader visited who has started at least five ongoing Discovery Bible Studies (DBS). Verlin and he discussed how to multiply existing groups and make more effective use of digital Scripture recordings to increase sharing Jesus among oral learners. Since his last monthly report, the Holy Spirit has been convicting some of the Djula with whom he meets. Five followers of that people group’s majority religion have changed allegiance. They have abandoned their hope in salvation by good works outweighing evil ones. They have come alive by confessing Jesus Christ as Lord. Two now worship in Evangelical church services; three continue to pray in the tradition of their families, but they have changed the One to whom they pray. They now address the Triune God thanks to the grace received from the resurrected Son who now transforms their lives. The most striking testimony is that of a woman. She reports feeling more alive than she has ever felt. Liberated. She cannot silence herself in the family despite efforts made to intimidate her. Her husband has consented to stay with her though she no longer shares his belief. When asked why she has no fear for her life, she does not restrain herself. She shares that Satan had her and her family far too long. She professes she would rather be with God wherever that leads than return to the shadows where she once lived.

Praise the Lord! He is ALIVE! Because He is, we are. Thank you for helping make it possible for many people to hear the Gospel for the first time and find salvation in Jesus.

Prayer and Praise
  • A DBS was started among some elderly Bondoukou women by a pastor of a church movement begun by Swiss Baptists. Two of these have confessed Jesus in that group that has since divided to grow. It is one of six DBS now meeting weekly out of that fellowship.
  • Praise the Lord with us that Debbie’s surgery went very well. She felt an immediate difference in her knee, even leaving the surgical center. There were no more “speed bumps” as she bent her knee. The doctor found no other cause for concern.
  • Pray for the those surrounding you and us who seem to be forever learning but unable to come to the knowledge of truth. They need the deposit of salvation, the Holy Spirit, who cannot guide them because they do not yet trust Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord.

Good Sam Time

PDF Version: AWA_Update_190413.PDF
As Debbie prepped our Tennessee Homestead to be a trip-free zone for her post-op recovery, Verlin traveled to and from the West African French CHE Regional Conference in Togo. In all the running, the Lord reminded Verlin of a social psychology study on helping (summary) based on the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). The landmark study showed the importance of not rushing along our ways to meet our priorities without sensing the needs of those around us. Those are the real teaching moments that connect us when obeying God. Here are five of the thirteen witness opportunities Verlin recalls as developed by this reminder this week:
  • While observing the loading of the bus departing Abidjan, a follower of Mohammad found himself persuaded to reconsider the identity of Issa (Jesus of Nazareth). He kept saying over to himself as Verlin witnessed that Issa must have been more than just a prophet.
  • After being praised by a Lebanese barber as ‘special’ for the time he takes to listen, Verlin slowed his rush to shop in order to eat at one of the new American style fast food restaurants. After studying his face intensely, a Frenchman approached and identified himself as the man that Verlin had talked with at length in a Bouake hotel in June 2018 when preparing for the November Million Village Challenge. The European shared that his life had been changed by that conversation! Apparently his disdain for the Protestant church has evaporated and he is now open to belief that God reveals Himself! It was a joy to realize that this man let go of decades of prejudice and misunderstanding to step closer to a vibrant relationship with Jesus.
  • The university CHE team regularly meets to plan and evaluate on Fridays. Verlin arranges his time to participate when in Abidjan, the treat being to drink some Moringa leaf tea. The choice to attend yesterday rather than rush to Bondoukou for some accounting allowed a fellow CHE Conference traveler to organize a training, a pharmacy student who helped us find the drop-off location for the traveler to become interested in learning about CHE, and the start of planning for a training in San Pedro!
  • Before leaving Abidjan Friday, Verlin spoke with two Christian leaders of two groups who have connections with Jesus Film and Reach the Rest / MegaVoice ministries. They are looking for believers in Bondoukou and Bouna from the Lobi and Kulango peoples with whom to partner in spreading the Gospel. International partners have given them access to equipment that they want to see used to touch the unreached in our area. Verlin will recommend some people to them soon.
Prayer and Praise
  • Pray that the Lord reassures many of those doing CHE that their work is important. There will be a congrès (a symposium where various people will share for about 15 minutes concerning their efforts in CHE around West Africa) before the fall CHE Exposition. The university team is welcoming pastors and church leaders who use the strategy to participate in the symposium. This will bolster the communication and cooperation. Pray the 7 we’ve targeted can share.
  • Pray that all goes smoothly for Debbie’s knee scope on Monday, April 15. The procedure is scheduled outpatient at 7:00 a.m.

Called Meetings

PDF Version: AWA_Update_190406.PDF
“Take a flight to Abidjan, find Verlin, and talk about CHE (Community Health Evangelism).” Something like that was the directive given to an Nigerian believer by a mission leader who had met Verlin during an International Wholistic Missions Conference (IWMC Tracks - Promo video). (FYI, the 2019 IWMC meets near Kansas City, May 1-3). Never mind that she did not have information to connect with us, nor that we live 7 hours from Abidjan! Nevertheless, our Lord arranged the paths of His servants to intersect. Asalina’s heart and mouth filled with praise when she unexpectedly met Verlin at the West African CHE Internship in Ghana. She had no idea that he was to share there, and everyone rejoiced that the Lord brought Verlin to her doorstep, so to speak. He had even arranged our separate timetables to allow for meetings in Abidjan without her having to search for him. Asalina and Verlin spent hours of discussion about CHE and met with others who have efforts in progress after Debbie left for the U.S. and as Verlin prepped for trainings and interviews. Her mission, World Challenge, is committed to integrating CHE in their endeavors around the world. They consider where, and how, to reinvest themselves initially in West Africa. We trust it will prove to have been a divinely called meeting, not one drummed up of human initiative, that shows results beyond those for which we now ask or imagine.

Debbie had a good meeting with her surgeon in Tennessee on Wednesday. A scope of her right knee is scheduled for Monday, April 15, with three weeks of physical therapy to follow. The operating premise is that scar tissue is creating her pain as the patella bumps over it. The implant does not appear to be damaged, according to an x-ray taken.

Prayer and Praise
(use the linked verses to focus the prayers if desired)
  • Praise the Lord for connecting us with necessary people this week (Amos 3:7). Thank Him that there seems to be no damage to Debbie’s implant, and that the procedure to alleviate her constant knee pain is straightforward with an expected and fairly short recovery time.
  • Verlin is in the planning stage for 2 additional CHE trainings being separately planned along coastal areas that may become 3 with another in the interior in the year. With Debbie gone, there are even more details to handle on his own. Pray for a smooth planning process and for helpers along the way. Since we will coordinate as a couple while apart for a few months, again, ask the Lord for grace and strength to effectively work together (Proverbs 16:9).
  • Tuesday’s CHE presentation on a Christian morning TV show went very well. The station's programming director has asked Verlin to come and share again when he is available in Abidjan (Psalm 90:12; Psalm 143.8).
  • The printing debacle of having sent the wrong quarterly update by mail is rectified. The correct update was sent last week. A few people may have received the new report twice, but for most people, they will get the latest update for the first time (Isaiah 28:23-29).
