Tested Faith

One great joy of being the parents of grown children is hearing them testify to God's faithfulness. We lived that delight on Friday afternoon, the day that our immediate family celebrated Thanksgiving in Cookeville. In the context of encouraging their younger brother during his job transition, our two older children reminded Corbin of their own faith-testing experiences early in their careers. Each shared along the common theme that we must learn the difference between contrived, man-made solutions, and trusting Jesus' voice to lead us into obedience, even when what He asks seems a little strange. A second gold nugget of advice was that we each must learn to know the Lord's voice for ourselves. Although advice from friends and family is valuable, second-hand leadership is not our inheritance in Christ. He speaks directly to His children when we have ears to hear and obey. We pray with trust that our grand-daughter also will eventually pick up on hearing Jesus' voice over time while she is surrounded by influences and witnesses family provides and potentiates.

Timely Friends

Last Sunday, Debbie attended church in Cookeville to participate in an unusually-planned physical therapy appointment on Sunday afternoon. Hours away, Verlin spoke in a partnering church in North Carolina. He then traveled to greet other ministry partners in Elizabethton, Tennessee, while worshiping with them during a Sunday evening service. Much to his chagrin, Old Red's fuel pump (our '95 Caravan) gave out after 221,956 miles of faithful service five miles from the church. Imagine that! 😀 We express our gratitude to the pastor and people of Valley Forge for swooping in to help. They provided a hotel for two nights, arranged the van to be towed to a known mechanic, and even paid for the repair! Our Father's constant and extravagant provision through His children amazes if we choose to perceive it.

Prayer & Praise

  • 🙏Pray that all our children will continue to experience the incomparable joy of hearing the voice of Jesus directly and quickly obeying. Continue to pray for Corbin to discover the job the Lord has prepared for him.
  • 🙏Thank the Lord with us for timely friends. Each of us is continuously blessed by the Body of Christ dispersed throughout the world. Our Father puts us in just the right place to help one another in time of need.
  • 🙏Ask for safe travels and encouraging meetings as we travel to Utah and Idaho for interaction with ministry partners.

Good Hurt

  • "It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes." Psalm 119:71
  • "…count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing." - James 1:2-4
  • "Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." - I Thessalonians 5:16-18
  • "…we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope: and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost…" - Romans 5:3-5
It is easy to get sidetracked by the rampant sorrows, sicknesses, and sins of 2020. At times it may feel like these months have been a total waste. The verses above tell a different story. Trials and the testing of faith teach us to learn God's ways, to become mature believers who lack nothing, and to be filled with hope. It is counterproductive to let the world's gloom and doom steal our joy! Happy Thanksgiving, dear friends and ministry partners! Below are a few of our many reasons to rejoice.

Grateful Hearts

  • Joy fills our hearts due to the progress of the Gospel and improving health in Cote d'Ivoire from the hard work of believers trusting in God. By using Community Health Evangelism (CHE) and Discovery Bible Study (DBS) approaches, thousands of reborn lives are being changed by our Savior during COVID restrictions. Praise the Lord!
  • Concerning us, stage three of Verlin's five-step dental implant was a success. Debbie's physical therapy has brought a decrease in her foot pain.
  • We are thankful our little longer stay in the U.S. helped our younger son move back to Tennessee and get to stay with us a few months.
  • Your warm and generous reception at church and home has been an amazing gift and encouragement. Thank you for praying to see our return to Africa for four or more years.

Prayer & Praise

  • 🙏Despite the stresses of this year, we joyfully focus on the Lord's faithfulness, love, and grace. We are glad to know we have everything needed for a holy and happy life!
  • 🙏Pray for a return to calm in Cote d'Ivoire and for a real resolution to political problems that cause great division. Our prayers are similar for pilgrims in the United States.
  • 🙏Pray for medical missionaries who work through exhausting situations, understaffed.

Chasing Foxes

Little Foxes

Little Fox, see article link
The wise man Solomon spoke of the little foxes that spoil the vineyards. These are little habits, little thoughts, little indiscretions, or little lies that lead us away from complete obedience to Jesus, the vine, God's Word. Before we know it, the vines are ravaged, and our lives and the nation's vineyard become a shambles. No group of people pays a higher price for the invasion of little foxes than our children. In the past few generations, most have not been prepared in heart and mind to overcome an onslaught of lies from schools, the entertainment industry, the press, and social media with their peers. Likely, many of us are captured by many lies, too. It is no wonder this generation's perceptions about origins, gender, sexuality, race, health, liberty, church, government, family, and the Lord are damaged. As one of our children put it, there is almost no way to reason with his generation. If you diverge on a theological or political topic, you are the enemy, not merely someone who disagrees and might expand another's understanding if a calm exchange of ideas took place.

Lamentable Fallout

Families are weak, churches are weak, and our nation is weak because we have not individually chased away enough little foxes that gnaw at our faith in God's Word speaking to each person. At this late hour, what can we do? Repent from following the crowd and renew our individual commitment. Be the example we expect our children to live out. Scour school textbooks and correct the lies. Call out movies and TV shows for ungodly principles. Monitor video games and social media. Teach children to think for themselves. Counter the lies they encounter with God's Word throughout the day. Recognize the fight and engage in it despite fatigue from busy lives.

In personal life and ministry, we now use Discovery Bible Studies to accomplish these goals. We model them during family devotions as a way to invite others to encounter the God of the Bible! When children or friends see us humble ourselves before God, hear and obey whatever His Word says, it levels the playing field. They see us do what we ask them to do: obey God. They also learn the vital truth that Jesus desires an intimate relationship with all people, whether young or old. There is no stronger protection against the little foxes than God's Word being lived out!

Prayer & Praise

  • 🙏 Ask the Lord to show us the "little foxes" that threaten our well-being as believers, not just the headlined problems, to be overcome by faithful obedience in the small things. May He teach us how to prepare and protect our children and grandchildren from life-destroying lies.
  • 🙏 Pray for the hundreds of Discovery Bible Studies (DBS) taking place in Cote d'Ivoire, that leaders will not grow complacent but teach others to lead studies, and that thousands of people will be saved and made disciples of Jesus. See last week's two-minute video to grip the possibilities. Prior updates explaining the DBS approach we use are linked here, here, here, here, and here among others. As always in our updates, the details are in the links!
  • 🙏 Our granddaughter Chelsea's return to her regular first-grade classroom has been beneficial. She recently had a report card with the best results ever.

Work, Watch, Wait

CHSC LINK: Work, Watch, Wait
PDF Version: AWA Weekly 201107.PDF

Watch as we Wait

In others' eyes, Americans are not always known for their patience. Perhaps one of the lessons we could learn from this turbulent election is empathy for the world. Waiting for days, weeks, and even months for credible election results is common in many countries. As anticipated, the Ivorian presidential election did not finish well. Although a winner emerged, opposition parties refused to acknowledge his legitimacy after encouraging their supporters to boycott the election. Violence and a sense of unease prevail while ordinary Ivorian citizens work, watch, and wait for political wrangling to cease. Most Ivorians want just enough peace to resume their everyday lives.

Work as we Watch

For us this week, we rejoiced to freely travel back to Tennessee, have a dental implant procedure, start physical therapy, and see hospitals, schools, and businesses open despite the political maneuvering in the United States. Verlin also helped connect E., the coordinator of an Ivorian CHE network, with Christian Connections for International Health (CCIH) through the networking of our mission's program director, Dr. Laura Smelter. The linked video testimony prepared by two Ivorian CHE trainers will be shared in a CCIH forum on November 10. Despite short notice and difficult political circumstances, they succeeded in reporting about an initiative they started with Ivorian CHE workers during COVID. We hope this video report gives you a great reason to rejoice! Verlin learned some YouTube tools to edit the video report so it can be watched with closed captioning in English or French. This two-minute report from one of the CHE champions that we encourage tells about eight-hundred families touched out of whom Jesus saved one-hundred and forty-five persons during the last few months.

Prayer & Praise

  • 🙏 Praise the Lord that He is not caught off guard by the political wrangling here or in Cote d'Ivoire! May each of us, through prayer, recognize and fulfill our role in shaping the future of our nation(s). Ask for a peaceful resolution for the Ivorian elections.
  • 🙏 Two co-laboring missionaries at Christian Health Service Corps, and one MK, recently tested positive with COVID-19. The results changed their travel and some ministry plans. Pray that they speedily recover while asking the Lord to send laborers to the remote areas of the world where adequate medical treatment is not readily available.
