Cherish the Treasure

Father, hear us, we are praying,
Hear the words our hearts are saying,
We are praying for our children…

from Prayer for our Children by Amy Carmichael

Heart-wrenching photos of innocent faces slaughtered in Uvalde, TX, remind us to cherish the treasure of children. Treasure the opportunity to influence and protect them, as did the two heroic teachers using their bodies and last breaths in their attempts to preserve their students. Cherish each child’s potential and train them to serve God and respect life. May we learn to cover their anxieties with Jesus’ healing love as we all struggle to overcome evil in our world.

Concomitantly this week, we discussed, and Debbie helped our mission’s founders plan some endeavors intended to bless the missionary kids of Christian Health Service Corps (CHSC). Work will continue on two projects over the summer. Little enables missionaries to continue in service more than knowing their children thrive through the myriad situations of ministry life. Heart-wrenching evil is only overcome by the shalom (© Sarah E. Fisher and hebrewwordlessons.com) brought to all by messengers of God’s goodwill.

Come and See (Psalm 66:5)

Verlin’s enjoyed a positive post-op appointment with the surgeon on Wednesday. The doctor said he could not be more pleased with the surgical results while expressing his encouragement by our ministry. (He participates in short-term overseas medical mission trips with colleagues.) As a result, Verlin was released to resume normal activities, except for lifting items weighing greater than twenty pounds for six more weeks. This lets us start for Tennessee Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, depending on the progress of a few small projects and discussions that we want to finish before leaving Texas.

Visit with friends from college days
In addition to rest and recovery for Verlin, doing some paperwork, we
  • visited missionary friends in Denton, Texas,
  • connected with Verlin’s oldest sister Vicki who “happened” to be in Dallas for a conference,
  • made progress on equipment repairs needed before we return to Côte d’Ivoire, and
  • spent a lovely evening with dear friends from college days.
As always, CHSC directors and staff received us with unwavering kindness, servanthood, and wholehearted assistance. We cherish the treasure of family, friends, co-workers, and ministry partners who faithfully walk this path with us.

Prayer & Praise

  • 🙏 Keep praying with us for the Uvalde, TX tragedy and for numerous interventions to be taken nationwide to prevent further carnage of this sort. May the Lord have mercy on our nation.
  • 🙏 Thank you for covering us with prayers for a safe return to Tennessee and continued healing. Also, ask the Lord to open many opportunities for us to interact with additional ministry partners around medical visits and Verlin’s upcoming dental surgery.
  • 🙏 Pray for missionaries whose children face difficult adjustments in ministry. Life overseas and new cultures challenge families. No missionary family is exempt from perceiving what seem like impossible situations without the Lord’s help. Ask our Father for wisdom to understand His leading, patience to wait for change and adjustment, and grace to persevere during hard times.
