Doers Not Hearers Only

Perhaps there is nothing more gratifying in ministry than to see people take advantage of opportunities to grow spiritually—then to put what they learn into practice! In June when DMM (Disciple Making Movement) trainers came from France to offer initial training, Verlin spent signficant effort encouraging a young pastor that the two days of training could greatly benefit his ministry. He did finally decide to attend. By now in July, the pastor has started a Bible study with over twelve people, and SEVEN of the people in that Bible study are committed to leading their own Bible studies! Pastor D. is on fire with how this outreach can share the gospel more effectively and multiply disciples of Jesus more quickly. Praise The Lord!

Verlin returned safely in Cote d’Ivoire on July 26, Tuesday afternoon, after running to board his overseas flight at the Dulles airport Monday evening. Wednesday morning he headed
Support Eagleton Sharing
four hours north to attend the FWB Ivorian National Assembly which began the prior evening. In upcoming weeks, we are eager to share more good news of the ever-expanding doors to use CHE (Community Health Evangelism) around the whole country that were solidified this week. One rural pastor was glad to know Debbie had been trained in
Women’s Cycle of Life CHE ministry (read the linked report from WCL in another country to know of its impact). In 2012 he and his wife stayed several days at our house while she sought treatment for some health issues. Debbie was able to share with her ways to prevent a common female illness. Since then, that pastor’s wife has been able to help others with that knowledge and the pastor believes WCL training will build upon the meaningful outreach in their setting.

Prayer and Praise:

  • The CHE training by Ivorians in the city of Man finished well.
  • Pastor Edmond earnestly thanked Verlin at the meeting for the counsel he received by phone & email that shared means to deal with the stresses brought upon his young family. All are doing better. To remember this story, go to this link: https://awaupdates.blogspot.com/2016/06/simple-gifts.html
  • Debbie’s follow-up visit with her surgeon this week was encouraging. He explained that the slower and more painful recovery is to be expected since he took extra time in surgery and used many more sutures than usual to prevent a recurrent abdominal hernia. He thinks our plan wise that Debbie spend three months more (or plus) in the States to regain strength before returning to Cote d’Ivoire.
  • We thank the Lord that Verlin discovered a phishing attack of our Paypal account and could handle the issue quickly. He was quite certain that Debbie had not ordered a fur stole from Nordstom’s!
  • Thank you for your faithful prayers and giving which allow us to touch the unsaved and believers in Cote d’Ivoire every day. Pray with us that lives will continue to be transformed in Jesus’ name.

Have you ever been part of a team that is regularly short workers to get the job done? It can be daunting, even exhausting. Some people give up; others try to assume the responsibilities of more than one and wear themselves out quickly. Our Lord confronted this reality as He sent out the 12, and then 70, to share the Kingdom message. Like most missionaries, we certainly need more CHE trainers in Cote d'Ivoire. Instead of giving up or wringing hands, Jesus instructs His disciples clearly. Therefore saith he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few:  pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest. Luke 10:2

A movement of Christians around the world takes this command seriously, including the French DMM (Disciple Making Movement update links) trainers who recently taught in Cote d'Ivoire. Every day they set the alarms on their cell phones or watches for 10:02 (morning, night, or both), asking the Lord to send laborers into His harvest. Inherent in the prayer, of course, is the willingness to go ourselves, or to help others go. An under two-minute video from Oklahoma Baptist church planters provides one of many examples of people giving voice and action to Jesus' plea such as we propose to you. We need more workers. Go to this link: 10:2 Prayer.

Verlin was blessed to attend the FWB National Association this week, as Debbie
continued the slow but steady process of recovering from surgery at her parents in Nashville. Before returning to Cote d'Ivoire on Monday, July 25, he will have been able to spend time with Debbie and family, and work a day at our Cookeville homestead. Recently a fierce storm uprooted a huge tree, which thankfully missed our manufactured home by about 20 feet.

Prayer and Praise:

  • Join Christians worldwide at 10:02 (morning or night) praying for laborers in the Harvest.
  • Ask for safe travels, wisdom, and strength for Verlin, as he returns to Cote d'Ivoire, while Debbie stays for some weeks or months to facilitate healing in the States.
  • This week three Community Health Evangelism trainers travel to the western town of Man in Cote d'Ivoire to complete a training of trainers at a Bible Institute.

Repairing Breaks

PDF Version: Anderson_WEEKLY_160716

This week's summary is out a day later than usual because of events that kept us from getting it sent.

A Summary of Prayers being Answered

Debbie recovers from her hernia repair surgery with members of all our family around her in Nashville. We’re jointly willing her the time stateside to minimize activity stress and allow for reparative rest of three months or more. We want to maximize her rest for healing to be ready for the work still before us.

Verlin can get in and out with the pick-up again as the wall has been mended. Friday and Saturday found him meeting with members of four different CHE teams while traveling to Abidjan to take a 10 day trip to the U.S. This will be the fourth year in a
Verlin typing at airport
row that one, or both of us, have been able to visit and see supporters at personal expense during the National Association of Free Will Baptists meeting and provide for testimony as needed to support ongoing transitions of land ownership that impact us and those with whom we minister. The bonus this year is that we get to see one another too during this unplanned separation. Verlin returns July 26 for activities here (Cote d’Ivoire). The planned and drop-by visits made in route to Abidjan for the flight to the U.S. reveal God continuing to add Community Health Evangelism and Community Health Engagement initiatives for the moment. The need for coordinative awareness is becoming critical, so,
if someone knows of better solutions than Google Calendars for freely sharing schedules and DropBox for sharing files, please send us a return note!

Other Reports for Prayer and Praise:
  • Several Bible Discovery groups have been confirmed by visit as having started using the Disciple Multiplying Movement (DMM) strategy in Abidjan since the HCFI training we shared June 11. Verlin shared the essential practices last Sunday in a Bondoukou church hoping it will catch on as we use it to provide a measure of spiritual openness there.
  • Four trainings besides the three at the university are known and set on the calendar for places as varied as a Bible institute in the northwest, a clinic to the south, and churches in the east and west!
  • The ticket is purchased to provide for the participation of Alice M. to bless the name of the Lord during September’s fourth annual university training. This former Medical Ambassadors International coordinator from Kenya now develops Community Health Engagement in N. Dakota.
  • Our former CHE lesson input specialist is now involved in assisting some orphan and children’s CHE ministries develop while at the same time helping some HCFI clinics learn to track their expenses to provide for better and more efficient care.

Broken Things

PDF Version: Anderson_WEEKLY_160709

Isn't it wonderful that the Lord is in the business of mending broken things in our lives! This week we are grateful that He provided for a torn hernia, a broken wall, and for broken lives to be touched.

On July 4th Debbie arrived safely in Nashville with the medical escort. Her hernia surgery is now scheduled for July 14th. The Lord's tender care was evident each step of the way.

Verlin had adventures of his own when he returned to Bondoukou. One that happened Thursday shows the continued openness for sharing and multiplying points of light to testify of Good News in Cote d'Ivoire. As he began to work on a report, a crashing noise sent him outdoors. A backhoe operator arriving to the road in front of our house swerved to prevent an accident with children. He stopped by taking out part of the wall surrounding our property! Verlin's calm reaction led to an interaction that created a make-shift repair while the foreman agreed to correct the destruction and evade firing the worker. Beyond this witness, an English learning brick-layer indicated that he and some friends would be interested in a Bible study. A community contact was made to follow-up on CHE based change introduced to a nearby location years ago, as Verlin shared about our reason for being in Cote d'Ivoire. See Transforming Touches for a video link and a DMM definition to understand more what we do together with your help.

Prayer & Praise :
  • Thank you for praying for a good outcome to Debbie's surgery on the 14th.
  • Pray that all involved are aware of Christ so that "yes be yes" and "no be no" (Mt 5:37; James 1:17-2-13) This will allow for quicker repair. Until the wall repair is complete, Verlin is hindered getting in and out. The workers did not provide the repair materials on Friday, as promised Thursday.
  • Pray for wisdom, souls saved, and our ability to clear or delegate mundane work so more Christians are equipped to disciple others. The Lord has recently moved in the hearts of numerous people to start Bible studies in their spheres of influence at work. K. is one example. He regularly gets follow-up advice from Verlin while developing an outreach at the auto repair shop he owns and as he disciples his family. We pray he will also open the door for CHE in his neighborhood.

Bump, Bump

PDF Version: Anderson_WEEKLY_160702

Life's journey has unexpected bumps along the road. In the end, that is all they are:  bumps that in no way change our destination or steal our joy in the journey. We hit such a bump this week. After more than 65 days of pain in her left side and 45 days on antibiotics, Debbie took a Lebanese doctor's advice and checked into a hospital in Abidjan for testing. The results were as expected. She appears to have a complication from her hernia surgery in November 2015 with no other serious findings. The doctor who admitted her manages over 1,000 hernia surgeries a year. He firmly stated that it is better for her to follow-up with her American doctor for this repair. We agree. Through the doctor's efforts on this end, and over 20 hours of Skype phone calls by Verlin, she flies out of Abidjan tomorrow to arrive in Nashville on Monday morning, July 4. We will meet the person accompanying her tonight. Our medical evacuation agreement will pay for her ticket and the fees of the medical professional who will escort her. St. Thomas Midtown Hospital will receive her on the other end. It is tempting to share more details of the Lord's provision, but we are trying to keep this short!

For now, and at Debbie's persuasion, Verlin remains in Cote d'Ivoire to continue work while she visits doctors and plans the surgery. Although this "bump" will certainly result in some lifestyle changes for her (i.e. weight of items lifted and perhaps a brace, etc.), we believe the likely outcome will be that she is back on the field to continue her part in ministry after a recovery period from the surgery.

Prayer & Praise :
  • For Debbie, safe travels and wisdom in what kind of hernia surgery to have.
  • Verlin will stay in Abidjan for a day or two before heading home to Bondoukou. He wants to meet with the CHE team at the university about the fall training. The Lord answered prayer last week when a CHE trainer with invaluable work experience from Kenya agreed to participate this year. More about that later.
  • Our son Cason and his family closed on a house in Nashville this week!
  • A practical training for medical missionaries occurs at the Christian Health Service Corps' Shalom Retreat and Training Center in Texas July 7-16. Pray that the Village Healthcare Intensive (offered with CME/CEU credits, or not) effectively helps equip the participants for overseas service.
