Bump, Bump

Life's journey has unexpected bumps along the road. In the end, that is all they are:  bumps that in no way change our destination or steal our joy in the journey. We hit such a bump this week. After more than 65 days of pain in her left side and 45 days on antibiotics, Debbie took a Lebanese doctor's advice and checked into a hospital in Abidjan for testing. The results were as expected. She appears to have a complication from her hernia surgery in November 2015 with no other serious findings. The doctor who admitted her manages over 1,000 hernia surgeries a year. He firmly stated that it is better for her to follow-up with her American doctor for this repair. We agree. Through the doctor's efforts on this end, and over 20 hours of Skype phone calls by Verlin, she flies out of Abidjan tomorrow to arrive in Nashville on Monday morning, July 4. We will meet the person accompanying her tonight. Our medical evacuation agreement will pay for her ticket and the fees of the medical professional who will escort her. St. Thomas Midtown Hospital will receive her on the other end. It is tempting to share more details of the Lord's provision, but we are trying to keep this short!

For now, and at Debbie's persuasion, Verlin remains in Cote d'Ivoire to continue work while she visits doctors and plans the surgery. Although this "bump" will certainly result in some lifestyle changes for her (i.e. weight of items lifted and perhaps a brace, etc.), we believe the likely outcome will be that she is back on the field to continue her part in ministry after a recovery period from the surgery.

Prayer & Praise :
  • For Debbie, safe travels and wisdom in what kind of hernia surgery to have.
  • Verlin will stay in Abidjan for a day or two before heading home to Bondoukou. He wants to meet with the CHE team at the university about the fall training. The Lord answered prayer last week when a CHE trainer with invaluable work experience from Kenya agreed to participate this year. More about that later.
  • Our son Cason and his family closed on a house in Nashville this week!
  • A practical training for medical missionaries occurs at the Christian Health Service Corps' Shalom Retreat and Training Center in Texas July 7-16. Pray that the Village Healthcare Intensive (offered with CME/CEU credits, or not) effectively helps equip the participants for overseas service.
