Stuck in the Snow

Illusion of fire-ice
Beautiful illusion of fire-ice
As we finished visits and work in Michigan earlier this week, the snow and ice storm struck our home in Tennessee on Monday. Cookeville was hit hard. 14,000 homes lost electricity, including ours. We knew because our younger son, Corbin, stuck it out at home with no warmth despite a neighbor’s nearby wood-burning stove! He endured two nights with exterior temperatures in the teens, then drove to Nashville to visit with brother Cason and his family.

Cara & Fine Fellow
Corbin, Chelsea, & SnowKong
When life gives you unexpected snowstorms, what do you do? Create a friendly family competition! Cara started it in Franklin, Tennessee, with her snowman on Thursday. After crafting her fine, welcoming fellow, she challenged her brother Corbin and niece Chelsea to make a better one in Hermitage. Our granddaughter discovered that being stuck at home in “real” snow is a grand adventure as her Snow Kong built with Corbin took on a weathervane plane!

Struck by the Glow

Ice Covered trees, unfallen!
On Friday, our trip south to Tennessee resembled a winter wonderland, with iridescent trees starring in the show. We arrived home around 10 PM. The storm results were evident, reinforced to us by the electric company’s dismal outlook. The situation even sent our stove-warmed neighbors to a hotel after five-nights. Debbie wrote this update in a hotel while Verlin set up a generator and connected it via a plug designed to provide lights and warm water. Just after he finished the installation on Saturday, city electricity was restored! Priority choices made during the hoopla send our weekly news late.

A more excellent glow illuminates our hearts regularly, too. Churches and individuals frequently give offerings when we make visits, for which we are so grateful. All donations are forwarded to Christian Health Service Corps (CHSC) for ministry uses unless the giver(s) specifically states otherwise. When someone specifies the funds as ‘personal,’ our senses go on alert to identify what might be a ‘surprise’ expense for us. Usually, months go by with no such directive. Suddenly, when we are about to experience an unexpected family expense like a generator this week or physical therapy last year, individuals or churches sense an “urge” to assign us a personal gift. Typically, charitable gifts from all ministry partners channeled through salary and expense reimbursement take care of us. At times, though, the Lord moves His people in unusual ways. This provision reminds us that He marvelously supplies all our needs according to His riches in Christ Jesus.

Prayer & Praise

  • ๐Ÿ™ Time is running out to finish necessary errands and purchases before Verlin leaves. We stayed in Michigan two days longer than expected due to the southern power outages and travel hazards. Pray that we can complete tasks quickly and calmly in Tennessee before travels to Texas.
  • ๐Ÿ™ Corbin has had an upswing in engineering interviews. Continue to pray for his job opportunities.
