A Good Fight!

Friday, Deb and I had one of those discussions that only partners redeemed in Christ can have: how are we to jointly reflect the image of God while submitting to Christ to one another? What does that look like? Discussions of belief are hot topics we discuss to model doing so respectfully, without physical or verbal abuse. A Muslim Ivorian overhearing our passionate, non-violent exchange became confused . . . at least for a few moments . . . until the Lord spoke to him a second time this week.

In his understanding, any like exchange between a man and a woman, shows disrespect and disorder in the family. As he’d just felt encouraged to understand Christ as the witness of God’s way to live daily with perseverance the day before (thanks to the shared witness of Chuck Ritchey, Sr.’s sand sculptures in Ocean City, MD), his overhearing of the discussion’s passion put him in a quandary. He knew that he’d heard from God the day before through Verlin’s witness. He’d even encouraged his hospitalized brother with the testimony of persevering to find God’s plans despite what seems futile. Yet, because of his understandings of life in this world - his worldview - he questioned momentarily that he’d heard from God. Per his Islamic belief system, he understands it OK to physically beat a female partner into submission for such behavior; per his Ivorian tribal beliefs, the woman is a sacred medium bringing life from the spiritual world into this one, best left alone and considered an unknowable mystery at times. He was visibly relieved when Verlin shared that 1) God created Adam and Eve (Adama and Awa for him) equally yet separately to jointly accomplish His agreed upon will; that 2) earnest, open discussion enables consolidation of separate beliefs of a husband and wife so that future generations of a family do not continue in a confusion of faiths, but nail down one obedience to address others later.

In the same way, God transforms His nations with the salting of believers overtime (last week’s update). We’ve wanted to share this video for some time, but this week seems appropriate as we’ve not had time to translate or otherwise prepare any of the five recorded Ivorian witnesses speaking as to how CHE has been changing their worldview.  This 1’50” video share of Dr. Barry Asmus describes the Protestant Christian vision that builds ‘Christian’ nations. A Christian nation is where laws are based upon Christ’s teachings revealed in both the Old and New Testaments and where knowing these truths set people free in daily experience; not everyone is necessarily a believer in such a nation.

  Prayer Points:
  • Pray that ‘Y’, and the many Muslim like him, learn submission to Christ’s words and ways as the final revelation of God before we enter eternity (Jude 3; Philippians 2:9-11).
