March Madness

PDF Version: AWA_Update_190316.PDF

March Madness aptly describes life for us lately, and it has nothing to do with basketball! As we transition from dry season to rain season, the heat is exhausting. We frequently have power outages for entire days. When on; computers, printers, and Internet boxes need fans turned on them to prevent overheating. Lately, this update has been edited and sent from the back seat of our Toyota truck using car battery power! Handling ministry responsibilities from different countries adds another level of planning to our lives. Verlin always makes sure that there are at least four people who can help Debbie should there be an emergency while he is gone.

Verlin has been in Ghana since Monday. It was his joy to facilitate 11 hours of training during two of four days at the West African CHE Internship center. He demonstrated how to lead Discovery Bible Studies (DBS) and led discussions from experience with Micro-Enterprise Development (MED). There are 19 participants this year, all but one coming from a West African nation. Two are Christian Health Service Corps (CHSC) missionaries. We are able to see, hear, and speak as to how the Lord is using Community Health Evangelism (CHE). Verlin will leave the training site on Sunday to visit two other medical missionary couples who serve with our mission before returning home.

Debbie has stayed equally busy at home. This week she spent over 20 hours printing materials for upcoming CHE ministries and trainings, while dealing with an eleven-year-old computer that abruptly dies if the electricity goes off. (2 newer models are out of commission!) She also prepared to receive Ivorian guests beginning today for a week while also planning for guests arriving from Ghana for 10 days in April. Now that the winds of dust have stopped, she has undertaken a two-week long spring-cleaning frenzy, wiping down walls and furniture with some help, as well as washing every curtain, bed or furniture cover, and rug in the house. Sunday she will continue the mentoring of 8 people learning to lead Discovery Bible Studies (DBS).

The great thing about March Madness is that it goes by quickly with all the busyness. Eventually, the rains come, the air cools, the electricity stabilizes, the house sparkles, the wearied traveler returns home, visitors are warmly received, and believers are better equipped for ministry.

Prayer and Praise
  • Continue to pray for safe travels and encouraging visits for Verlin while in Ghana. He should be back home before next week's update. Pray also for Debbie as she holds down the fort and receives and serves our guests for the week.
  • Pray for participants at the West African CHE Internship. The training continues all of March.
  • Thank the Lord with us for several good reports in the DBS now happening around town. M. reported starting another of 8 today. One church is spending the entire Sunday School hour training all the adults how to become disciples of Jesus and lead the DBS.
