New Things

Taste and See (Psalm 34:8)

As 2026 hovers in the wings, many make New Year’s resolutions to change their lives in needful ways. Statistically, less than 10% of resolutions will be kept. What to do, then, about original sin’s fruitfully unproductive habits that many of us recognize in ourselves? An article entitled “How to Biblically Break Bad Habits” published online in Bible Life Magazine (read here) lists important steps to take. We have previously profited from books like Atomic Habits by James Clear, which offer specific ways to create new systems or routines in daily life, giving new habits space to develop. Two areas where Biblical perspective and science agree are the need to identify the root cause of the habit (stress, boredom, lust, trauma, etc.) and the necessity of replacing the bad habit with a good one to fill the void.

251227-Behold
Revelation 21:5

It is great comfort at the cusp of the New Year to remember that our Savior makes all things new. While it is God who works in us to will and do His good pleasure (Phil. 2:13), He expects us to engage our will and cooperate with His indwelling Spirit to “work out our salvation with fear and trembling.” Daily obedience (Phil. 2:12) lets us take off the ‘old’ man and put on the ‘new’ (Eph. 4:22-24). No matter how many times we may have failed in the past, He remains within as we learn each day to walk in the Spirit! Since Jesus alone walked this earth without sin, why would anyone go to another for help first?

Come and See (Psalm 66:5)

The transformation communities experience with the strategic use of Community Health Evangelism (CHE) involves significant change. The change(s) can overwhelm people who discard habits that may have been in place for centuries, and start doing things differently. Observing firsthand, or talking to people who have come from places that have already chosen to make similar change(s), is vital. As many Ivorians transform their habits of faith and life, you have helped us accompany or send them to CHE seminars, expositions, and trainings. In these spaces, they hear about change while they see its fruit! The West African CHE Internship begins soon with several days of video conferencing, followed by weeks of in-person exchanges in Ghana. The internship starts in February 2026. Four Ivorians expect to attend, an exception to the limit of two per country granted due to the level of activity. Other West Africans prepare to attend a Foundations in Farming training in Burkina Faso. It, too, is scheduled for early 2026. Thank you for partnering with us so we can point many communities toward the spiritual and physical change that faith in Jesus alone can bring. There is nothing like it

Prayer & Praise

  • 🙏 Pray for the Foundations in Farming training that will happen in Burkina Faso in January or February. Some CHE-trained colleagues from Côte d’Ivoire hope to attend.

  • 🙏 Lift preparations up in prayer for the 6-week CHE Internship, which happens yearly in Ghana. Ask the Lord to provide the remaining funds needed by interns and for the wisdom of those planning and training. The opportunity begins in February.

  • 🙏 Pray for us as we integrate new disciplines in the coming year. We would be pleased to pray for you and your communities as you work to end old habits and develop new ones. While we have prayed generally for your well-being and lives, it would be a privilege to pray specifically for concerns you wish to share. Debbie will make a book of prayers to let us pray effectively. Accountability and encouragement remain important factors in making lifestyle changes!
