Going fishing?

PDF version: Anderson WEEKLY 150711

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." (Maimonides) This seems perfectly logical in a Christian worldview. But from the perspective of an African animist, this may not be sensible at all.  What would be your response if you believed, as many do in this world, that some fish may be your relatives?

We may laugh at the thought, but this is the reality of one Ivorian village and illustrates the power of a key understanding of Community Health Evangelism (CHE):  the integration of spiritual and physical ministry.  CHE requires more than combining Band-Aids with tracts.  Belief is understood to drive behavior.  As a result, beliefs are sounded to be addressed as felt needs are examined.  Common assets provided by a loving Creator get rediscovered as being readily available for the needs. Inaccurate beliefs which captivate people in dependent patterns yield to those founded upon God’s Word. As an accurate faith in mathematics allows mankind to build stable structures, so accurate faith in what God has spoken lets men live blessed lives.

The integration among believers is to bring together Jesus’ Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20), and the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-40). CHE programs strategically accomplish this by training community members as Community Health Evangelists (CHEs) who regularly visit 10 – 15 neighboring households. These men and women share the Gospel and promote principles of disease prevention and healthy living. The program is designed to be transferable, multipliable, and ongoing after the training team leaves the area.

Franklin Graham shares the idea this way: “We must see the whole man and his total need. If you only see his mental need you will become an educator. If you only see his political oppression, you will become a revolutionary or a politician. And if you see only his spiritual need, you will become a religionist. It is in seeing the whole man, with the strongest emphasis on the spiritual that you become a Christian witness, a missionary, an evangelist, a communicator of God’s Word.”

Prayer & Praise:
  • Pray for rapid passport renewal so our invitations to reside in Cote d'Ivoire show the new passport IDs.
  • Pray for safety and wise speaking as we travel to visit supporters and friends during the week.
Thank you for being partners and friends!

The Christian Health Service Corps (CHSC) is a mission of dedicated medical professionals who participate in the CHE Global Network. Together, in a loose affiliation of individuals, churches, denominational and nondenominational agencies, we share God's Light and Truth through Community Health Evangelism (CHE). Verlin and Debbie require about 25 partners at $100 per month of support, or their equivalents, to resume residential ministry of expanding CHE ministries in Cote d'Ivoire under the auspices of the CHSC and Ivorian partners. Tax deductible contributions by check are to be made payable to the CHSC with Anderson #0118 written in memo and mailed to CHSC – PO Box 132 – Fruitdale, TX 75127.
