So much has to happen before a runner gets to the starting line on the day of race: so many decisions, so many hours of training, so much planning. The blast of the starting pistol actually signals that the end of a long process is near. That is the way it feels when the annual CHE training at the University of Felix Houphouet-Boigny (UFHB) in Cocody-Abidjan arrives. The actual event, which is September 13-16, is the culmination of hundreds of hours of prayer and preparation. Before the training ends, Verlin, AISEC, and UFHB CHE team leaders will plan what needs to happen over the year to advance CHE here.
This week he met with all the Ivorian trainers, except one in the rural north with whom he connected by phone. Three trainers live in Abengourou, so Verlin stayed there two days, before going on to Abidjan. On Tuesday, he and Emmanuel met for four hours. (Emmanuel, president of the Ivorian Association of CHE known as AISEC, is shown in the picture.)They covered details of the university training, outstanding Bible Institute training invitations to be prioritized, a national meeting plan, the progress of CHE dissemination among different denominations, and yet other tasks before the national group. If Debbie counted right, Verlin spent over 20 hours just this week in individual meetings, besides travel and lesson organization. In addition, this year we have two special guest trainers who are English-only speakers, so any time they share, there must be a person available to translate into French.
On Friday, the UFHB planning team in Abidjan worked through a glitch. The Monday of September 12 is a widely celebrated Muslim family holiday. To accommodate this lunar calendar celebration that changes dates on the annual solar calendar, the training will be condensed to four days. It is a typical WAWA (West Africa Wins Again) moment. Please pray for the event and next week's coordination efforts. The Lord uses this training to influence all of Cote d'Ivoire, so we are never surprised that obstacles abound.
Prayer and Praise:
- Ask the Lord to give safe travel to the non-Ivorian trainers arriving by Sunday, September 11. They come from the USA, France, and Nigeria. Pray for adjustments to the different weather, food choices, and time zones. Fatigue is expected for all the trainers as they balance four trainings that happen concurrently this year. Verlin often gets just 3 or 4 hours of nightly sleep that week.
- Debbie was able to get the repairs done on the water leak at our mobile home. Now we just need some very hard rains to test the work. Her recovery from surgery is markedly improved each week. She and Verlin's mother, Elsie, will travel to Michigan on Wednesday, September 7, if all goes well.
