If Only...

Sad news. Heartache. If only.... We have a special request for an Ivorian pastor this week. Verlin learned of this tragedy while dining Tuesday night with Pastor Doukoum of the Abengourou FWB Church. It is his family's picture you see here, and they, by the way, are expecting twins. Doukoum received DMM (Discipleship Making Movements) training this summer at Verlin's encouragement, and he has an active Bible study group at church. Five from that group are determined to begin their own Bible studies with friends and co-workers, and so multiply followers of Jesus! As they ate, Doukoum shared with Verlin the sad news of a fellow pastor working in a remote village.

About two weeks ago the wife of Doukoum's pastor friend died in childbirth. She was actually packing to move to a town with a hospital for the delivery, but she went into labor that night and bled to death. The child survived and is living with family. These stories are all-too-common. Our hearts burn with the desire to help prevent them. We were particularly grieved as we thought of lessons from the Women's Cycle of Life (WCL) training that help pregnant women learn indications that their pregnancies may be at risk and when to seek medical help early. If only this precious sister could have had that instruction which shines with the Gospel. Pray with us that a strong team of Ivorian women can be trained in WCL to teach their sisters these life-changing truths. Two Christian ladies who were trained at the university last week are prayerfully considering becoming WCL trainers. We will meet with them in months to come. (Each WCL link describes a different Women's Cycle of Life program or training source around the world).

Your prayers and financial help make a huge difference in some of those "if only's." By faith in Christ, the eternal destination of souls is transferred to heaven. Others learn to take dominion of the earth, as the Lord commanded in Genesis, to see the health of their families and communities transformed, crops increase their yield, addictions healed, and marriages strengthened. Thank you for being faithful partners as we direct Ivorians to the One who did everything necessary to give them hope.

Prayer and Praise:
  • Pray for the pastor whose wife died, and for Pastor Doukoum, his family, and the Bible study he leads. Also pray for another believer and good friend in Abengourou who owns a mechanic's shop. He, too, is having a Bible study with some of his workers and looks to DMM to provide a step-by-step format to lead them. (A link to an explanatory DMM video and webpage remains below.)
  • Ask the Lord to build a team of women WCL trainers who can share with their Ivorian sisters.
  • Continue to pray as Debbie sees her Nashville doctors about the cellulitis.

Verlin and Debbie
