Gems of Grace Expositions

Hidden Gems

Flyer for CHE Expositions
One side benefit to spending time in Abidjan preparing for the University Community Health Engagement (CHE) expositions is the opportunity to interact with CHE partners developed at the University. After distributing classroom assignments, we sorted and organized CHE lessons so the number of handouts to photocopy for accompanying the three 35-hour sessions of CHE training could be calculated. These sixteen hours of prep work for hosting the multi-level training took place at the University's toxicology lab. Since students remain on summer break, the lab provides sufficient counter space to spread out the documents for review and correction.

As we worked, leaves and feves dried beside us. We are always intrigued to see what experiments Professor Luc undertakes for the benefit of his countrymen. One of his passions revealed and developed during our relationship is extracting healing compounds from plants to predictably treat a plethora of specific health issues. This believing brother regularly taps into the wisdom revealed in Christ for medical solutions. If time prioritization allowed, he and Verlin would talk for days about remedies to provide for healthier living. This time, their exchanges centered on the sulfur compound distinction in cassava plants which is found in cruciferous vegetables and thought to limit some cancers.

Healing Grace

On Tuesday, the 18-year-old girl from Guinee who came with Ebola to Cote d'Ivoire last week was pronounced free of the virus! The traceable people with whom she had immediate contact have been vaccinated, as well. Last week, once the case was confirmed, Guinee sent Cote d'Ivoire 3,000 vaccines for Ebola made available through the United Nations.

In other excellent health news, people are amazed to see our Ivorian pastor's wife's remarkable recovery from her ulcer through diet and food management. She continues the regimen of cabbage juice and olive oil that Verlin recommended. It is a joy to see her face free from pain and to know that she sleeps well while beginning to resume her former routines little by little.

Prayer & Praise

  • Science Congress Flyer
    • πŸ™ The Scientific Congress takes place this upcoming week. Pray that the outcome will fortify the use of CHE into more venues within the nation and region.

    • πŸ™ Rejoice with us for the healing of the girl from Ebola. Ask the Lord to enable the public health department to continue to contain the spread of this deadly virus.

    • πŸ™ Thank the Lord for his revealing how to assist our pastor's wife's health help herself. It is a joy to see her face free from pain and to know she resumes more activity each week.

Pleasant Memories

Business session at the Ivorian FWB Nat'l
We enjoyed spending a short time at the National Associ -ation meeting of Ivorian FWBs mid-week. It gave occasion to see many brothers and sisters with whom we have connected or ministered during our past 21 years in Cote d’Ivoire. The timely teaching centered around our denomination’s history, what that translates to mean in the African context, and the fundamentals of the faith. All of us need reminders of the origins of our faith and history. The understanding provides grounding for us during perilous days. Although a relatively small crowd attended the meetings, they chose their national leadership for four years. Debbie caught up with some friends she had not seen in over 10 years, including a man who was a faithful worker for her mother at the Doropo clinic when she was a young child! Verlin helped a Community Health Evangelism (CHE) trainer prepare for the upcoming Scientific Congress. We left before meetings ended to provide sufficient time for repacking at home and finishing errands before going to Abidjan for a month.

Profitable Mentoring

Verlin received a pleasant surprise during his more than 1,000-mile visit to various CHE trainers. He stopped to visit R., a trainer who will join us for the university training, in a town about an hour from home. After parking alongside the NGO office of R., he heard a voice calling his name. It took a few minutes and some prompts for him to remember the young man he had trained to use Discovery Bible Studies (DBS) in Bondoukou during early 2019. A. left our town to pursue training in Abidjan to work with metal. According to his testimony, he has started DBS wherever the Lord has taken him. He continues to find the Lord communicate His will to him directly in different ways through these Bible studies, and he uses the tool (FR) (EN) to reach out to friends. He sees the origins of his blessing and direction by studying and obeying the Word of the Lord.

Prayer & Praise

    • πŸ™ Earlier this week, CΓ΄te d’Ivoire confirmed its first case of Ebola in 25 years. Neighboring Guinea immediately sent vaccines to help with the crisis. The United Nations offers help, as well. Avian flu among chickens has surfaced in one town on the coast, too. When it rains, it pours!

    • πŸ™ Pray for the new Ivorian FWB leadership elected this week. Ask the Lord to give them wisdom and clarity in addressing issues and challenges to keep the group united in their mission.

    • πŸ™ Joining the world in prayer for the people of Afghanistan.

Say Yes, Step Out

Say Yes

Earlier in August our older son, Cason, wrote a blog post for his work with D6. In it, he recounted some of the faith-stretching events that led to him and Suzanne adopting our precious granddaughter, Chelsea. His testimony is encouraging. Not only does it record a significant event in our family’s life, but it also serves as a timely reminder about saying yes to God amid life’s vagaries. You may read the article in its entirety here online (PDF here).

Step Out

Corbin, our younger son, called with some fantastic news in August, too. In just a couple of weeks at his new job, he was promoted to a Quality Management position. Also, on Friday, he finally received the keys to his month-long-awaited apartment in Alabama. So, this weekend, he moves some belongings from our Tennessee homestead to have a bed upon which to sleep!

After delays because of some health issues, Verlin began traveling to visit Community Health Evangelism (CHE) trainers. Certain coworkers in the Gospel ramp up with us for the Scientific Congress and the week-long university CHE training that follows that will bifurcate his travels. Also, a national association meeting of some Free Will Baptists (FWBs) happens next week, which one or both of us will partially attend to meet friends and complete CHE training plans. Following that, we will relocate to Abidjan for a month or so for training responsibilities. September is usually our most time-pressed month of the year. We count on your prayers.

Prayer & Praise

    • πŸ™ Thank the Lord with us for Chelsea’s presence and how she has blossomed in our son’s family. Pray for her as she began second grade this week, mainstreamed into a regular class. Ask the Father of all to help Corbin in transporting some of his belongings from Tennessee to Alabama.
    • πŸ™ Praise God for Verlin’s speedy recovery from an eye infection and Debbie’s overcoming two different ones with some blood pressure spikes.
    • πŸ™ The National Association of Ivorian FWB’s happens this upcoming week in Bouna. Pray for great fellowship and excellent decisions.
    • πŸ™ Continue to pray for upcoming travels and team preparation for the university-based events.

Jehoshaphat NOT Jumping!

When They do not Come

Although the phrase “Jumping Jehoshaphat” became a pop exclamation in the United States in the mid-1800s, King J. of Judah is truthfully remembered more for “standing still.” 2 Chronicles 20 records the great salvation of the Lord against an enemy army under Jehoshaphat. However, something earlier in his reign interests us this week. As a good king of Judah devoted to the Word of the Lord, he did something fascinating in the third year of his reign. We are told in 2 Chronicles 17 that he sent a team of officials, Levites, and priests to ALL the cities of Judah. Their task was not to proclaim royal decrees or whip the masses into line but to teach the Book of the Law among the people! Imagine that.

It reminds us why we embrace Discovery Bible Studies (DBS) as the spiritual component of Community Health Evangelism (CHE) strategies used in Cote d’Ivoire. The task of sharing the Good News is too great to wait for people to come to a building, although corporate worship is a beautiful privilege for believers. Individuals and families desperately need to know how to study God’s Word at home, hear from Him daily and personally, and be capable of sharing the Truth with their circles of influence. Then we will see more and more movements of people coming to Jesus in our day and time.

This week we viewed a video about Disciple Making Movements (DMM) and Discovery Bible Studies (DBS) created by friends in France. Using DBS and CHE, they labor to see movements of people come to Christ in Europe, a challenging terrain where millions remain disillusioned with “the church.” Although the French videos may not benefit many of our English readers, they will assist others. (Thusfar, other videos in the French series include: Ta Carte OIKOS, Les Groupes de DΓ©couverte, and La Grande Histoire). The content reminds us that for 100 years, the percentage of Christians in the world has been relatively “stuck” at 33%, as mentioned in a prior resource video we’ve shared. However, since the early 1990s, followers of Jesus have seen the Lord work prodigiously through DMM. Around 10 movements were carefully documented in 1999, 30 in 2005, about 80 in 2011, and in 2020, approximately 1,370 movements of people were coming to Christ. That entails approximately 80 million new members of the Kingdom in two short decades! Thank you so much for sending us here to equip Ivorians. They, too, could experience that kind of movement here.

When we Cannot go

Sometimes we want to go but get delayed. That happened to us this week. Verlin expected to leave on Wednesday to visit CHE ministry partners scattered around the country. It is time to finalize presentations for partners who plan to participate in the Scientific Congress in Abidjan in September. Instead, he stayed home to care for Debbie as she developed cellulitis and experienced a spike in blood pressure for one day. She is much better now, but then he developed pink eye mid-week. Clearly, this week was not on the Lord’s agenda for Verlin to travel, but we expect him to travel soon.

Prayer & Praise

    • πŸ™ Thank the Lord for His healing touch on both of us. Hopefully, we are through with illnesses for a while! August 6th COVID statistics reported from Cote d’Ivoire are as follows: 50,893 confirmed cases since January 3 of 2020 and 338 deaths.
    • πŸ™ Pray for a multiplication of millions of people coming to Christ in our generation! It is possible!
    • πŸ™ Continue to pray for upcoming travels and team preparation for the university training.
