Taste and See (Psalm 34:8)

Free Will Baptist women have had a rich history of serving their communities, nation, and world since 1873, when they officially organized as the Women’s Missionary Society (now Women Nationally Active for Christ — WNAC). One such endeavor provided funding and teachers for Storer College in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia, a school that educated former slaves. Helping mission endeavors has been a definite passion for over 150 years. Debbie loves every opportunity to share with local, district, and state groups, as they serve Christ with prayers, projects, and provisions, locally and worldwide.

Love in action!
This week Debbie had lunch with a long-time friend and ministry partner who serves in the WNAC in Michigan. After a lovely time sharing ministry and family news, she mentioned that Verlin found our sheets in poor condition and our spatulas broken. WNAC groups regularly ask about home and ministry needs, and how they can help. We knew these gracious ladies would discuss the situation and do something, if possible. Imagine Debbie’s surprise when this friend and another sister from her local church arrived at Verlin’s mom’s house three hours later with three beautiful sets of sheets in the correct sizes and a wealth of spatulas! This kind of speedy, generous, and heartfelt partnership makes offering hospitality and home comfort much easier in a nation with no Walmart.

Come and See (Psalm 66:5)

Verlin busies himself prepping food, clothes, and teaching materials for travel. He supervised the replacement of rotted ceiling or roof supports while filling out an expense report. The wobbly gates protecting entry to the walled property got new framing square bars, replacing the cracked and rusted ones. Screens were mounted to allow air circulation between the house’s patched roof and ceilings. A FWB church member now engaged by local government to rectify local land attribution stopped by to learn of texts explaining USA exceptionalism and to discuss local issues. Some locals took counsel to evade a Ponzi scheme on hearing God’s plans for cash. Verlin also connected with CHE trainers in preparing for the week-long September training at the university.

Debbie enjoyed her week in Michigan with family and ministry partners, returning home to Cookeville on Thursday. She happily spent Wednesday night in Elizabethtown, KY, where our third child, Corbin, works. Friday’s follow-up with the endocrinologist revealed that most of the lab results were normal. She will have one final test for cortisol levels, since that was slightly high.

Prayer & Praise

  • 🙏 Thank the Lord for safe travels and ministry partners who quickly helped provide items for us to offer hospitality in Côte d’Ivoire.

  • 🙏 Praise the Lord; most of Debbie’s adrenal tests came back within the normal range, except for slightly high cortisol. She will have another test this week.

  • 🙏 The FWB Ivorian national association meeting is in August. Pray that decisions made will honor the Lord and extend Gospel witness. Verlin will visit, traveling to sites of CHE programs to deliver lessons and discuss the details of the university training in September before and after.
Your partners in the Gospel,
Verlin & Debbie
