If Only...

PDF Version: Anderson_WEEKLY_160924

Sad news. Heartache. If only.... We have a special request for an Ivorian pastor this week. Verlin learned of this tragedy while dining Tuesday night with Pastor Doukoum of the Abengourou FWB Church. It is his family's picture you see here, and they, by the way, are expecting twins. Doukoum received DMM (Discipleship Making Movements) training this summer at Verlin's encouragement, and he has an active Bible study group at church. Five from that group are determined to begin their own Bible studies with friends and co-workers, and so multiply followers of Jesus! As they ate, Doukoum shared with Verlin the sad news of a fellow pastor working in a remote village.

About two weeks ago the wife of Doukoum's pastor friend died in childbirth. She was actually packing to move to a town with a hospital for the delivery, but she went into labor that night and bled to death. The child survived and is living with family. These stories are all-too-common. Our hearts burn with the desire to help prevent them. We were particularly grieved as we thought of lessons from the Women's Cycle of Life (WCL) training that help pregnant women learn indications that their pregnancies may be at risk and when to seek medical help early. If only this precious sister could have had that instruction which shines with the Gospel. Pray with us that a strong team of Ivorian women can be trained in WCL to teach their sisters these life-changing truths. Two Christian ladies who were trained at the university last week are prayerfully considering becoming WCL trainers. We will meet with them in months to come. (Each WCL link describes a different Women's Cycle of Life program or training source around the world).

Your prayers and financial help make a huge difference in some of those "if only's." By faith in Christ, the eternal destination of souls is transferred to heaven. Others learn to take dominion of the earth, as the Lord commanded in Genesis, to see the health of their families and communities transformed, crops increase their yield, addictions healed, and marriages strengthened. Thank you for being faithful partners as we direct Ivorians to the One who did everything necessary to give them hope.

Prayer and Praise:
  • Pray for the pastor whose wife died, and for Pastor Doukoum, his family, and the Bible study he leads. Also pray for another believer and good friend in Abengourou who owns a mechanic's shop. He, too, is having a Bible study with some of his workers and looks to DMM to provide a step-by-step format to lead them. (A link to an explanatory DMM video and webpage remains below.)
  • Ask the Lord to build a team of women WCL trainers who can share with their Ivorian sisters.
  • Continue to pray as Debbie sees her Nashville doctors about the cellulitis.

I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
Psalm 16:8

It is an encouraging study to see what the "right hand" of the Lord accomplishes in the Bible. During His earthly ministry, Jesus extended his hand over and over again to bring healing and blessings to many lives. Then, after His death and resurrection, He ascended back to heaven where He sat down at the right hand of the Father, a place of honor, authority, and power. From that position, He extends His hand to help us, His children. Now we, in turn, reach out to bring comfort, healing, and blessing to people around us. Thank you for joining with us hand in hand to offer salvation and transformation in Jesus' name!

HOLDING HANDS
For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.
Isaiah 41:13

After months of separation because of Debbie's surgery and lengthy recovery, we were finally reunited in Cote d'Ivoire on January 9, as hoped and prayed. We took a week to rest, reconnect, and renew one of her residency papers before returning home. We praise the Lord that she is now pain-free and able to handle regular activities. It is a joy to be close enough to hold hands again in life and ministry!

HURTING HANDS
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me...and thy right hand shall save me.
Psalm 138:7

The Lord continues to open doors to help people in need or to prevent future catastrophe:  a man hurt by corruption in the church now follows a false religion, but is willing to talk regularly; a young woman died in childbirth when a WCL (Women's Cycle of Life) CHE ministry would probably have helped preserve her life; polluted water in a stream threatens the health of villagers just beginning to be exposed to the Gospel. All of these people, and many more, need the saving health that Jesus offers, and He has placed them within the touch of our hands.

HOPEFUL HANDS
O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvelous things; his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.
Psalm 98:1

On February 20, Verlin and an Ivorian pastor returned to the village of Bougou in central Cote d'Ivoire to complete the first level CHE training with 17 leaders. Verlin was impressed at the end of the sessions with their understanding and application of what they learned.  Verlin noted that one of the men is physically handicapped. It speaks volumes in this culture that he is considered worthy to be a trainer. It speaks even louder of the change wrought by Christ that others cite him as an encouraging example. Perhaps the Lord will use this brother to help start a "can do" ministry here among those that our societies call "handicapped." (There exists a Community Health Evangelism program dedicated to those considered "disabled" becoming agents who enable the transformation of communities.)

Another great opportunity has opened up in an unevangelized village not far from Bondoukou. The entire village is uniting to undertake a large agricultural project and has agreed that they need to better know the Creator through regular spiritual teaching, as well.

HELPING HANDS
And I entreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other fellow laborers, whose names are in the book of life.
Philippians 4:3

None of this is possible without your faithful prayers and some of you in financial partnership. We are so grateful for both. The generosity of several end-of-year donors during the last quarter helped us "catch up" monthly needs. On average, those donors diminished by half our average monthly shortfall that limited our development of Ivorian support efforts.

In summary, the 2016 4Q giving overcame the $1,200 per month shortfall anticipated, but not the entire shortfall of the year. Having evaded the expansion of commitments here during Debbie's absence, we begin 2017 as well funded as 2016 began, less the planned purchase of the small pickup that we now use. The addition of several new donors, along with the increased generosity of others, replaced a couple of large annual donors who could not participate with us this year and returned us to a good starting point. This is yet another evidence that Jehovah-Jireh (our God will provide) remains faithful. To increase follow-up with regional teams in western Cote d'Ivoire while still mentoring others in the south and east to do the same, will require the financial resources dedicated to this ministry to increase the same $1,200 per month on average that we left the U.S. needing in March 2016.

Our quarterly financial report is available in the linked PDF version at start of this article, or you can view the simple numbers without any accompanying explanation here:170318_Anderson_CHSC_Donation_Report.jpg

PRAYING HANDS
  • Praise:  the Lord DID restore Debbie's health and remove the "mystery" pain. He DID provide us reasonable health insurance for 2017. He gave safe travels and excellent training sessions to Verlin. He continues to open doors every month for outreach.
  • Ask the Lord to help believers just trained in CHE, as they work and organize in their villages to develop ministries to reach their regions for Christ.
  • Pray for a new CHE outreach in planning stages for a couple of Bible Institutes in central Cote d'Ivoire.
  • Pray for travel mercies during the month of April, and perhaps May, as we plan to connect with CHE trainers in western Cote d'Ivoire that were displaced or hindered during the later years of the political crisis for which a practical truce has been real since 2012.
  • Ask for grace as we travel and help receives guests in late March and early April. Pray for a FWB national pastor's retreat on April 25-29.

Integral Disciple

In recent years, banter about 'discipleship' has again become the rage in church circles. As Verlin's Father drove home, "What goes around, comes around." (See Ecclesiastes 1:9, 3:1, & 12:1.) Our sharing that statement is not meant to minimize the importance of discipling others. We do that! Instead, it relates the cyclical nature of how God's Kingdom spreads truth across generations: He initiates organized churches through the families of any given culture.

The cycle (like the circle) has remained unbroken since Israel left Egypt as it commenced with the Tabernacle. A more detailed explanation of the cycle explains the reforms Jesus began in synagogue worship that evolved into the many denominations we have today. The reforms reinforced the basic D6 principle for their and future generations: consider and apply God's Word in every action of life you take and word you speak. (See Deuteronomy 6; Romans 8:4.) The God-initiated cycle of discipleship assures that truth for life gets passed generationally within homes by God-collaborating parents to their participating heirs. As Protestant Reformers recognized, God ordained an institutional triad of home, state, and church that cooperates for the end of heartfelt obedience in all of a nation. (See the linked Researched Example.) The problem with the banter is that many doing the talking today need to learn how to walk the walk in our time. For God, ignorance is not really a problem hindering His plans. Our creative Creator made it so circumstance forces that His word and our deeds eventually come to match in our world. The wise follow His narrow way in their time while leading others to evade heartaches during the cycles that collapse and renew families until Jesus' rule in-person returns.

For any dedicated believer wanting to evade the fad and produce the consistent staying power of a practice that maintains cross-generational discipleship, that person must distinguish the 'fad' from the 'faith.' To do that, a believer must meet people who walk the talk today. Discipleship remains 'caught more than taught.' It's more personal and regular than the fad movements that Malcolm Gladwell traced in The Tipping Point.

Come and See (Psalm 66:5)

We count Pastor Jean-Marc and Dr. Martine Fritsch as friends similarly "caught" through Community Health Evangelism (CHE). They are among many using CHE to start new churches and church-planting movements from scratch while assisting other groups to revitalize or revive.
They recently added several videos to the "Il l'a dit" (FR) Youtube (EN) site to ease distribution while instructing others directly. This humble and unassuming French couple has led and championed CHE with Disciple-Making Movements (DMM) for decades, seeing remarkable results in Africa, France, and other European nations. Each "Il l'a dit" video gets posted in French, then dubbed into English and German (DE) to bless others they train. "The Integral Disciple (EN) is one of their newer offerings. (Click this link or the image to view the English version.)

As one beggar tells another where to find bread, we pass to you helpful material imbued with life-changing principles from CHE and DMM movements that integrate approaches that pass enduring faith through every generation. The videos contain little 'faddish' instruction and pass along bedrock understandings. Being an integral disciple of Jesus remains essential for all believers in all places at all times. Families who personally know the Truth for life navigate the rise and fall of church movements that grow irrelevant for lack of basic obedience to God. This obedience is what CHE strategies mentor. Every believer needs reminders of our role as pilgrims making progress. May the three imperatives of being an integral disciple help you refocus, too.

On the news from last week, our Ivorian brother, who pursues appointments with officials to rectify the registration of private lands, continues to get the runaround. He and Verlin did not meet with the regional prefect this week. Continue to pray for timely appointments and progress for him in proving his land rights. Debbie made good progress on the university CHE lessons this week. Plodding is the essence of the process. Verlin continued trainer preparations for the CHE university training and handled some computer issues and finances.

Prayer & Praise

  • 🙏 Pray for a CHE trainer who has not been paid for work for nearly six months. He expects a contract to continue the work soon but also needs reimbursement for work completed at his own expense:

  • 🙏 Ask our Father to intervene for our Ivorian brother needing government appointments for property rights.

  • 🙏 Pray again for Corbin, our youngest offspring, to find housing near his new engineering job.

Prayed Progressions

PDF Version : Anderson_WEEKLY_150516

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners,

It is a blessing to share a PROGRESS report on several issues we asked you to pray about.
  • Praise the Lord (PTL): Last week the ground was dry enough on family
property for the land to be cleared. Placing a house trailer on it will allow us to demonstrate a permanent residential interest in the U.S. That permits us to purchase markedly more affordable health and medical evacuation insurances.
    Pray this finishes by mid-June.
  • PTL: The Women's Cycle of Life training Debbie pursued in Phoenix greatly increases her ability to minister and train others to use Community Health Evangelism (CHE). The Women's Cycle of Life CHE curriculum directly deals with women’s health issues and addresses gender inequality from the perspective that we are created by God and created equally. Teachings from the Bible are used that show both men and women are wonderfully made in God’s sight. The lessons are basic and simple to teach, making them easily transferable. Pray they become widely used in Cote d'Ivoire after our return to residence so that lives are saved and churches planted as is being done with farming, micro-enterprise, and clinic-based CHE programs.
  • PTL: Cason and Suzanne (our son and daughter-in-law) have successfully completed some adoption classes and three house visits from the Tennessee Department of Children's Services. Hopefully, the scheduled May 26, 2015 meeting will finish with our future 2-year-old granddaughter being placed in their home. After six successful months serving as her foster parents, the adoption process could be finalized. Pray the remaining steps go smoothly.
  • PTL: Corbin successfully completed his first year of college and returned to Nashville this week. Pray his summer of work further develops his life and work skills.
  • PTL: Monthly financial support is being added regularly to our mission account.
About $1,000 more per month was promised in the last 9 weeks. Your prayers make a difference. We thank you very much and ask that you continue to Pray as we estimate still needing the equivalent of 30 partners at $100 per month.

Hidden Treasure

CHSC LINK: Hidden Treasure
PDF Version: AWA Weekly 200509.PDF

Her Worth is Priceless

“Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.” (Prov. 31:10) In every generation, finding virtuous women is like hunting for treasure! In our society, biblically noble women frequently feel denigrated for believing that their roles of wife and mother are valuable. Radical feminists overcompensate to dominate men and prove the superiority of the female. In other parts of the world, women are considered possessions, or slaves, with little opportunity for education or any sense of value. Both extremes hinder the spread of what is beautiful: Biblical womanhood. It must grieve our Heavenly Father to see His daughters treated with contempt or feeling unable to fulfill the mission He gives them. Women are priceless to Him and the world He created, as are men.

Her Work is Productive

Virtuous women who are sure of their worth in God’s eyes, centered on fulfilling the plan for their lives, are among the most joyous, empowered, and productive persons who tread the earth. It is an added blessing if their families and cultures value and praise their essential roles. The Proverbs 31 woman showcases our Creator’s design. A woman confident that God cherishes her and desires her best in all is unstoppable as an effervescent force in her family and community.

I have a heart for women

Knowing women and their participation in family and community development is crucial, Community Health Evangelism (CHE) offers a training series specifically designed for women. It is called Women’s Cycle of Life (WCL). These Biblical and practical lessons engender astounding transformation. Mentors inform women of their worth in the Heavenly Father’s eyes. Learning their Biblical roles as wives and mothers and a plethora of health-related and practical skills areas helps them flourish in every facet of life. As we celebrate the part of the beloved, virtuous women in our lives this weekend, rejoice by viewing this short video about WCL. The Ethiopian women featured represent tens of thousands of lives now known to have been invigorated around the world through this CHE option in action. Viva the virtuous woman!

Prayer and Praise

  • We are extraordinarily blessed by our godly and hard-working mothers who pour their love and prayers into our lives. Their support and encouragement is a constant treasure. These children rise up and called them blessed!
  • Cote d’Ivoire’s CO-VID cases surpassed 1,500 this week. Thankfully, the recovery rates are continuing to grow, as well. Friends called Verlin this week to let us know that life in the interior (outside of Abidjan) works. Intercity travel remains active and public services like schools are to be rebooted.

Diving In

PDF Version : Anderson_WEEKLY_160102

Happy New Year, Friends and Ministry partners!

As all of us dive into 2016 serving the Lord, here is a condensed summary of the quarterly ministry report we gave our mission agency, the Christian Health Service Corp (CHSC), last night. It omits many items mentioned previously (1, 2, 3, +). The submission took place as we begin preparations to return to Cote d’Ivoire for life and ministry. It dates what God did the last quarter of 2015 through our partnership together, apart from our visits to U.S. churches. The CHSC sustains other medical missionary works around the world, and so we also pass on this information with links to end-of-year (EOY) agency news. These are available to read online, if you click the underlined links for the CHSC email update, or a PDF copy of the EOY mailer. We are blessed to influence lives around the world for Christ with these sent healers. Below are some specifics of what your and our joint effort served to initiate, support, or do together the last quarter of 2015.
  • 12/29/2015 – A pastor friend of FWB heritage shares his intent to pursue using the CHE infused outreach of the Saddleback Church PEACE program in South Africa among refugees, and with pastors in Kenya.
  • 10/13/2015 – The Federation of Evangelical Churches (FECI) president makes plans to train his church in the spring of 2016. He also will promote CHE Training of Trainers (TOT1) to disciple and prayerfully unite evangelical churches throughout the nation in a common effort (mentioned here).
  • 10/12/2015 – A seminary professor who specializes in Church Planting Movements (CPM) commits to begin CHE TOT1 trainings after return from Seoul, South Korea, in January 2016. This is a follow-up to his 2014 Abidjan University CHEngagement training.
  • 10/11/2015 – Leadership of a Port Bouet church renews their program that had been left on the back-burner following the death of a CHE trainer.
  • 10/07/2015 – Leaders of the Ivorian Association of CHE meet to trace a path of training CHE teams so that 200 are active in Cote d’Ivoire by 2021.
Follow-up shared by president of the National CHE Association of Cote d’Ivoire (AISEC):
  • 11/29/2015 – Healthcare Christian Fellowship International (HCFI) decides to train 120 Ivorian members using CHE TOT1 in 2016.
  • 11/30/2015  –  Women’s Cycle of Life Training completed at ARC en Christ in November;
  • 12/5/2015 – Microenterprise training at Kodjokrom as part of University CHEngagement program;
  • 12/12/2015 – God-fearing Family Planning done.
Please pray that we all walk closely with the Lord, redeem the time, renew physical strength, manage our families wisely, see financial needs met, and share Christ clearly.

May this New Year with our Lord be crowned with Godly abundance (Psalm 65:11)

Worth your salt?

PDF Version :Anderson_WEEKLY_160514

As we continue unpacking, calculating expenses of our absence to cover, and taking moments to witness, our time to ‘settle in’ apart from others becomes rare.  Many here learned the phrase, ‘Time is money’. That’s true, but time is more. Time measures life. We’re all about using ours to facilitate obedience to our Creator so life flourishes. The use of our time here serves as the measure of our united obedience to God’s calling that becomes possible in the Holy Spirit when a sinner repents and confesses Christ as his Lord.

Our service here as ‘seasoning salt’ keeps growing beyond what we do. The Lord adds to our numbers monthly, almost weekly now. The Lord reminded us as Verlin experimented with egg, oatmeal, flaxseed, moringa-leaf-powder pancakes, that being salt boosts the flavor of other ingredients. Salting to taste is about releasing flavor and aroma; it’s not about becoming the flavor. ‘Salting’ is not about becoming dominant, it’s about being a servant to other flavors. It’s the same measure for effective witness.

When salt loses savor, it’s worthless because it does not potentiate anything around it (Mark 9:50). Thank you for participating in this sacrifice of being salt here. Together we can rejoice in the release of pleasing aromatic witnesses for
Christ. Yesterday was a case-in-point for Debbie to witness again firsthand the shift of interest that’s happened here in the last four years; the increase of savor our presence adds.  Deb participated in the regional meeting of Christian and Missionary Alliance (CMA) women. There is now a second or third group of witnesses in Gagnoa interested in Community Health Evangelism (CHE). Verlin has to double check other recent invitations, but is fairly sure two are from there. We, or some we’ve trained, will likely be the ones to disciple those witnesses toward the center and west of the country. (We are NE). The nationwide waiting list grows.

  Prayer Points:
  • Pray the Lord add laborers, Christian professionals, to continue the CHE movement. Pray we, or affiliated others, wisely choose and train those the Lord has called to serve. The second weekend training of an HCFI group happened in Abidjan as Deb filled one speaker’s place in Abengourou.
  • PTL, the inkjet print and the scan units both worked when unpacked. This allowed us to print the Women’s Cycle of Life lesson Deb used in yesterday’s introductory meeting. Pray the Lord continues to bless us with little loss of equipment function. So far, everything brought out is working after 33 months of being packed and moved three times or more.

This week, we are happy to share a video that shows the way God is blessing the CHE Women’s Cycle of Life (WCL) ministry around the world. It is from Medical Ambassadors International (MAI), the organization that spearheads the CHE Global Network. Debbie participated in this training in May, and we trust the Lord will use it mightily in Cote d’Ivoire. One CHE worker already approached Verlin last week to say a group of women looks forward to Debbie’s return to learn and promote WCL (there are currently no active, traveling female trainers in Cote d'Ivoire). Besides the video to the right, you can view these links from the Global CHE Network and from MAI to further understand what the training involves :

MAI - Lasting Impact, One Woman at a Time.

Praise and Prayer:
  • The Lord provided a house for us that will cost a bit less than $150.00 per month to rent! More details later.
  • Debbie travels on Monday to attend the Michigan WAC State Retreat later in the week. Pray as she shares one time there and enjoys fellowship with the ladies. Ask for safety as she drives an old vehicle that has not been on long road trips recently.
  • Verlin returned to Abidjan on Saturday and will finish preparations for the university outreach this week. The CHE training will take place September 14-18. Several trainers are new on the team this year. Numerous challenges have popped up every few days, especially in regards to work schedules of some trainers who leave (i.e. take time off from) their full-time jobs to volunteer for this ministry opportunity. Thank you for bathing this event in prayer.

"Jesus is King" Road

PDF Version :Anderson_WEEKLY_160507

As we mentioned last October, Bondoukou is historically known as "The City of a Thousand Mosques." This picture from our yard shows the mosque right behind
our house with a loudspeaker attached to the minaret. It faces our courtyard! The rude awakening between 4 and 5 AM every morning, with the Muslim call to prayer, is a shock at first, but it symbolizes the reason we are here. Pray Muslims become true servants of God in Bondoukou, as well as other Ivorian locations. For that to largely happen, Holy Spirit filled believers will have to share the Truth with them from house to house and in personal relationships, while confronting lies in every venue of life:  spiritual, physical, social, and emotional. It is certain that they will not come en masse to our places of worship for answers. Thankfully, CHE (Community Health Evangelism) lets believers regularly go into their midst and encourage all together to find the way of Christ.

Although surrounded by a worldview embracing death moreso than life, we are not discouraged. A few days ago we met an Assembly of God pastor who lives just a few doors down from us. Count a second pastor just beyond him, and a FWB pastor just north of us, and that equals four ministers in less than half a mile. The AoG pastor suggested we need to name our street "Jesus is King" Road!

This Saturday, May 14, we will travel to Abengourou, three hours south. Debbie has been asked to share with a group of Christian women who consider beginning a CHE Women's Cycle of Life ministry. She would have preferred more days to prepare, but accepts this appointment from the Lord.

  Prayer Points:
  • Verlin took a turn with malaria this week, and has thankfully recovered fully.
  • Our serious Internet problem was corrected Thursday, and we have enjoyed good service for two days since then, except as we write this today!
  • Ask for a fruitful meeting with Debbie and the ladies.
  • Recently Verlin met a man who had much contact with one of our earliest FWB missionaries. He considers himself now an Islamologist, and wants to discuss Jesus being presented in the Koran. Pray for honest dialogue and prepared hearts.
